Day six of Whistler’s Crankworx Festival featured the Volkswagen Best Trick contest, giving slopestyle specialists a chance to throw down their trump card in front of a panel of judges and thousands of spectators in pursuit of a $6000 purse. Two sections of Saturday’s slopestyle course were used for the winner-take-all event, each giving riders 45 minutes of a jam-style format where they can do as many tricks as they wish. At the end of each of the two sessions on the stunts the rider awarded the Best Trick would receive a giant check which apparently has a street value of $3000.
Greg Watts’ (Haro) flip-whip gave him the victory in the first session, while Darren Berrecloth (Specialized) sent it big time with a huge, classic switch 360 lookback over the slopestyle courses’ final obstacle, the Kokanee step down. Only two riders brought home cash from the Best Trick contest, but each competitor put down an impressive display of bike handling in the windy conditions.
Darren Berrecloth spins it right-round for the fans, and the cash.
