Due to a violation of Rules 1H4 and 1A29 of the 2007 USA Cycling Rulebook, the results of the Master's Women 30-34 category at the 2007 U.S. Cyclocross National Championships have been revised.
Original winner Maureen Bruno-Roy (Arlington, MA) has been declared ineligible after it was determined she violated Rule 1H4 which states: Riders classified as Elite under Rule 1A29 may not enter master's races in a discipline for which they have Elite status and subsequent Rule 1A29 which states: An Elite rider is one whohas a racing age of 30 years or older and has competed in any elite UCI World Cups, World Championships, Pan American Games, Pan American Championships or Olympic Games within the current calendar year.
Roy placed 26th in the Cyclocross World Cup in Koksijde, Belgium in November 24. Her participation in that event subsequently made her ineligible to compete in the master's category at the national championships.
Following the revision, Josie Jacques-Maynes (Capitola, CA) has been declared the national champion in the women's 30-34 category. Sally Annis (Nashua, NH) is the new silver medalist and Kristi Berg (Arlington, WA) is the bronze medalist. Rounding out the five-woman podium is Melodie Metzger (Berkeley, CA) in fourth place and Rebecca Wellons (Woburn, MA) in fifth.
"It is unfortunate that Ms. Roy's ineligibility was not brought to our attention until after the event," said Steve Johnson, CEO of USA Cycling. "This situation highlights the importance of every athlete being aware of the published rules and regulations that dictate a fair racing environment for all of our members. On behalf of USA Cycling, I'd like to congratulate Ms. Jacques-Mayne on her national title and wish both athletes the best of luck in future events."
The following is a statement from Roy:
"To my sponsors, family, friends and fellow racers and supporters: It is with great sadness and sincere apology that I regret to inform you that I have been required to step down as the 2007 Master's 30-34 Cyclocross National Champion.
"On January 23, it was brought to my attention that at the time of the Cyclocross National Championships I was ineligible to have participated in the Master's event after racing a World Cup under the current USA Cycling rules. Neither the race officials at Nationals nor I were aware that I was ineligible at the time of the event. I would like to share in the responsibility for the oversight of this rule with the USA Cycling officials at Nationals as this decision is being made six weeks after the event.
"I would especially like to apologize to my sponsors and to my fellow racers in the Master's event."
