The Easiest-To-Release Clipless Pedal?

Dear Mountain Bike Action: I have arthritic knees. I’m trying to make them last till I’m 65 (two more years) before I have them replaced. I am looking for a clipless pedal that will release very easily. Your suggestion?
-Paul, with platform pedals

Mountain Bike Action: You want to go with a Shimano pedal. Their release mechanism is easily adjustable, and we have found the release and clip-in action to be intuitive and accurate. The best bang for the buck is their PD-M540 pedal. One additional trick: Shimano offers an accessory cleat (the SM-SH56) that releases in multiple directions instead of the stocker’s one-twist release. We would recommend those cleats because of your knees. By the way, Paul, you are an inspiration.
