Maxi test: October 2005
Highlights: Specialized's flagship jumper, the simply-named P3, can stand bar to bar with any custom-built jump bike and, in some cases, may stand above them. The P3's aluminum frame uses a [centerfold] top tube, a butted and manipulated downtube, a forged and relieved head tube, a forged bottom bracket shell with integrated ISCG tabs, forged horizontal dropouts, an integrated derailleur hanger, disc-only brake mounts, and an asymmetrical, 6-millimeter offset rear triangle. Frames are even available in short or long sizes (to appease rider preference rather than the rider's size). The bottom bracket (one of the most abused components of any jump bike) is the proven Truvativ ISIS GigaPipe DHLT.
Best quote: "Whether working a pack of small jumps or Xgames-worthy booters, the P3 flew stable and landed smooth."
Bottom line: The 2005 Specialized P3 nails it for dirt jumping--and then gives you more. This is a bike that you can jump one day, mountaincross on the weekend and even use to embarrass a few trail riders every once in a while when you're feeling energetic. If jumping is your passion, but you don't want to be boxed in with a bike that won't do anything else, the P3 is your ticket.
