For just under $2k, you can get a carbon hardtail 29er: a much better investment than throwing money at a fifteen year old bike.

Q
: Have a ‘97 YETI ARC bike that’s been sitting. I plan to either upgrade the fork, brakes and shifting equipment) or buy a new bike. I love cross country riding, am 175 pounds, 6 feet tall and have a $2000 budget. How should I go?
Alfredo

A: You need a new bike. The Yeti was a great bike, but it is old now. The cost of putting a new fork, brakes and drivetrain will easily exceed the value of the bike and you will even have trouble finding modern components that are compatible with the frame.

In your price range and for what you want to do with your riding, we would suggest that you narrow your search to aluminum hardtail 29ers. That is not a very narrow search because all the major brands offer this type of bike.
