Steven Kinney from Steven K Sports here. Mountain Bike Action is having me do the guess report from the opening mountain bike race of the world. For the first 2008 Winter Series event at Southridge Park in Fontana, CA, I awoke at Big Bear to find myself snowed-in. After digging out of 2 feet of fresh powder I was still able to make it down the hill in time. The weather was perfect, about 80 degrees with clear sun. Eric Bierman, who over the fall decided to implement a training regimen for the first time, won the cross-country semipro class. In doing so he had the fastest time of the day and set the first course record and time to beat for 2008. Then 45 minutes later Bierman raced the Pro Super D and won it by 11 seconds over MBA tester and SoCal Specialized rider Waylon Smith. Steven K's Michelle Rivera also won the Pro Women's Super D. Then on Sunday in extremely windy
conditions Michelle placed 3rd in the Pro Women's Downhill.

Check back for Southridge Winter Series 4-Cross, Downhill and Super D reports, photos and top 10 results.

8:00 a.m. crunch: New riders, long lines, new plates, new numbers and new SRC members. SoCal mountain biking is alive and kicking!

Packed house: There was standing room only on the XC start. The overflow crowd was rewarded with great weather and a fantastic course.

#12: Southridge Racing Club's Donny Jackson on the bullhorn at the start. "The dirt is perfect...Look out for the new singletrack..."

Pro start: Waylon Smith, Garnet Vertican, Michael Hansen, Robert Herber, Eric Bierman, Steve Kinney, Allen LaFrambise and Monique Sawicki.

District 37: Gary Yzinger Scheidler off the main line and using desert tactics down the drop into the park. Behind is ESI Grip's Gary Stewart.

Fourth fastest: Ex National Marathon Series Champ Monique Sawicki wowed all with an incredible time. Monique is fit and very fast.

MBA's own: 2nd place 45-54 Expert Eddie Arnet tip-toeing up the hike-a-bike. Phillippe Minniti pushes and Ken Gioeli is about to dismount.

Warm welcome: Longtime Southridge Pro downhiller Nancy Harris has just begun racing XC to improve endurance. This woman has the world's best attitude.

SRC CX?: Urban Cyclocross promoter Brad House made a guess appearance as the Southridge announcer. Could cyclocross be in SRC's future?

Pro's 1-5: Robert Herber, Michael Hansen, Garnet Vertican, Steve Kinney and Waylon Smith took the lion's share of the $500 Shimano purse.
