I am in the market for my first set of clipless mountain bike pedals. People have recommended the Time ATAC, Crankbrothers Eggbeaters and Speedplay Frogs. Are these good pedals to look at, or should I look at anything else? What does the wrecking crew ride?
--Sam, outside of Salt Lake City

MBA: We have a lot of hours on the Time and Crankbrothers pedals you mentioned (we have not ridden a Speedplay mountain bike pedal recently). Out of those two, we would grab the Time for all-round riding because of the comfortable
platform and adjustable cleat release, and the Crankbrothers for racing applications where reduced weight is the number-one goal. The pedal missing from your wish list is the one we would recommend first.

You owe it to yourself to try Shimano pedals—the five-star-rated XTR if you can afford it, or the XT or 540 models. We all ride them because of their adjustability, consistent release/clamping performance, nice platform, durability and compatibility with a wide range of shoes. First-time clipless pedal riders love Shimano’s intuitive and adjustable release mechanism. Fewer Laugh-In falls for the new rider.
