Proper pickup truck loading?

Dear Mountain Bike Action:
I do all of my shuttling in a pickup with a towel over the tailgate. I have problems with my bikes falling over. Are there advantages to using the pick-up pad or will the towel get the job done just as well?

-BK, who hates to pedal

A: All pickup pads have drawbacks. In addition to the bikes falling over, they usually do little to protect the underside of the downtube when bikes are loaded. They also allow the bikes to rub together. It’s better to use tie-down straps, receiver style hitch mounts or truck bed mounts such as the Rec-Rac, (719) 634-2876. The bottom line is that we have never had good luck with tailgate covers for shuttling bikes. If you really need to haul a lot of bikes, a cover will work as a last resort, but you're better off with another system.

Another not-so-great way to haul your bikes.
