While official results have yet to be posted on the USA Cycling website, unofficially, Specialized's Mitch Ropelato won Sunday's PRO GRT downhill competition at Fontana, California, aboard a 29-inch Specialized Stumpjumper trailbike. He beat teammate, Aaron Gwin, who elected to ride a Specialized Demo 8 downhiller. The Fontana downhill course has a great deal of pedaling at the bottom, but riders usually find riding a trailbike is too much of a trade-off for the gnarly, rock descents midway through the course. Not Mitch.
Thanks to Steve Anderson for the awesome shots.
Mitch Ropelato is going to make a lot of downhillers uncomfortable. You are not supposed to be able to win a Pro GRT downhill on a trailbike.
Aaron Gwin has raced two Pro GRT Downhills so far on his new Specialized ride and finished second both times. We expect Aaron to be dialed in time for the first World Cup downhill.
for complete results.
