This rider won World Cup events in both the cross-country and downhill classes.
He won the overall World Cup cross-country title in 1991, then came in second
overall for both 1992 and 1993. He also came in second overall in the World Cup
downhill series for 1993. His last World Cup race win came in 1997, when he
won the final World Cup downhill of the year. Longtime fans and readers
of Mountain Bike Action will also remember that he was one of our main
test riders in the late '80s. He also won the UCI cross-country World Championship
in 1991, and took the silver in the downhill at the same event. He won many
national championships in the United States, including titles in cross-country,
downhill, and dual slalom as well as the overall title, back when they used to add up
the points from the other three categories to determine who was the top rider
all around. He also competed successfully in BMX and road racing. In a poll of top
mountain bikers conducted by MBA a few years ago, this guy was voted the greatest
all-around rider in the history of the sport. His name is John Tomac. This shot is
from 2005, and it was taken on the famous Mammoth Mountain Kamikaze
downhill course in California. (Photo: John Ker/Mountain Bike Action)
