Over ten years ago, building contractor Ray Petro decided he wanted to build an indoor mountain bike park in Cleveland, Ohio. It sounded like a crazy idea, but Ray found a large, empty building that would work and talked the property owners into the idea. He then got his mountain-biking carpenter friends to help him build it in return for getting lifetime riding passes at the park. In the end, he put it all together and proved the naysayers wrong. Now in its tenth season, Ray's MTB
is open from October through April every year, closing for the summer for annual remodeling. The park is said to encompass over 140,000 square feet. It has even been selected by the International Mountain Bicycling Association as one of its "Epic Rides," a designation saved for the very best mountain bike trails in America. The place is an absolute blast to ride and a fun place to hang out all day long, for days on end. Ray opened a second park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the winter of 2010-2011, with the financial assistance of Trek Bicycles. That one is great, too.
