6.5-inch rear wheel travel
Norco, (604) 522-2930
Maxi test: June 2006
Highlights: The Six One is a long-legged dual-suspension chassis that represents just about every trick Norco has learned along the way. The heart of the Six One's chassis is Norco's VPS linkage (Variable Position Suspension), a compact four-bar suspension that uses a Horst-Link dropout arrangement to keep the suspension moving while its pilot is busy braking and pedaling. The "Variable" part of VPS refers to a pair of shock mounting positions that make 5.7 or 6.5 inches of rear-wheel travel. Substantial-sized sealed ball bearings keep the monkey-motion swinging freely and in all weather conditions.
Best quote: "Jumps and drops to flat are met with a higher degree of cushion than we would expect from a six-inch-travel, big-hit machine."
Bottom line: Capable technical riders who don't mind huffing a 35-pound bike uphill will find the Six One a joyful and ultra-capable playmate that is always one step ahead of its pilot. This is a machine that can wring the twists and turns from any singletrack, balance on a tightrope, and sprout wings when necessary. The Six One is a hoot to ride, and you'll be searching for ghosts if you believe that you can find a more versatile ride for under three grand. All mountain? Definitely.
