Olympic Gold Medalist and former mountain bike cross-country world champion, Miguel Martinez, came back after a four-year absence to shock the strongest professional cross-country field of America's 2013 race season by riding away to the win. Miguel, a Frenchman with a Spanish name who now lives in Italy, left mountain biking on the top to pursue a road racing career. A serious accident where his was hit by a car caused Miguel to call it quits. That was four years ago.
FRM, an Italian frame and component company,
who also happen to be close friends of Miguel
, talked him into riding their Italian-made frames and components. The agreement was one of friendship and fun. No pressure. No demands. No expectations to ride like the younger Miguel (he is now 37). Just get on the bike and do what feels right.
We bet not even his friends at FRM expected Miguel's breakout performance at the Sea Otter Classic Pro Men Cross-Country race. Miguel didn't look like he lost anything over the last four years of retirement. He still had his signature butt-on-the-saddle-nose power position to motor up the Otter's hills to distance himself from everyone except Geoff Kabush
and Todd Wells.
It was an amazing performance and a welcomed return of a mountain biking legend.
