The 2008 Cyclocross Calendar continued with three Category 2 races. The Beacon Cross in New Jersey was the first to take place on Saturday. The elite men's contest was won in solo fashion by Italian Davide Frattini over Justin Spinelli (Providence, RI/Richard Sachs-RGM Watches) and his teammate Matt Kraus (Arlington, MA) respectively. Georgia Gould (Ketchum, ID/Luna Chix) won the elite women's contest by more than two minutes over Maureen Bruno-Roy (Arlington, MA/Independent Fabrication) and Rebecca Wellons (Woburn, MA/Ridley Factory Team) who sprinted to second and third respectively.

Also on Saturday--and on the same series and on the opposite side of the States, the Mountaineer Cross in Gunnison, CO took place as mountain biker Todd Wells (Durango, CO/GT) outrode a talented field that included Denmark's Joachim Parbo and last year's Junior Cyclocross World Championship silver medalist, Danny Summerhill (Englewood, CO/TIAA-CREF-5280) to take the win. Parbo outsprinted the young Summerhill by a mere two seconds to take the silver. Amy Dombroski (Boulder, CO/Velo Bella-Kona) and mountain Biker Melissa Thomas (Boulder, CO/Team Maxxis) gave a preview of what was to come the following day, finishing first and second. Nicole Duke (Boulder, CO/Boulder Cycle Sport) rounded out the podium.

In Sunday's FLC Squawkercross race hosted by Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, Todd Wells, Norba star Geoff Kabush (Can), and Joey Thompson (Nevada City, CA/Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory) spaced out first-, second- and third-place finishes respectively. Amy Dombroski and Melissa Thomas again took first and second in the elite women's contest with mountain biker Kristin Danielson (Durango, CO/Velo Bella-Kona) finishing third.

With 23 races now complete, the current Cyclocross Calendar standings are as follows (mountain bike names are in full caps):

2. Tim Johnson...Cannondale-Leer-Cyclocrossworld...247

Next weekend four more Category 2 races mark the continuation of the very diluted, hard to understand and ill-conceived Cyclocross Calendar that only a poorly run organization like USA Cycling could design. The U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross Mercer Park #1 and #2 will take place on back-to-back days in Lebanon, NJ. Farther south and at the very same time, the North Carolina Gran Prix #1 and #2 will take place in
Hendersonville, NC.
