COMPLETE U.S. MOUNTAIN BIKE OLYMPIC TEAM
USA Cycling has just announced the final nominee to the 2008 Olympic Mountain Bike Team. It has been confirmed today that Mary McConneloug (Chilmark, MA) will be the 4th rider who will represent the United States in China next month.
McConneloug earned a discretionary selection and was nominated to the final Olympic Team by a nine-person selection committee according to USAC's Principles of Discretion.
McConneloug will join Georgia Gould on the two woman cross-country mountain bike squad. Currently the highest ranked American in the world in 10th, McConneloug has been a model of consistency on the 2008 Mountain Bike World Cup circuit, placing 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and
18th in the five World Cups to date. Most recently, McConneloug was the third best American at the 2008 Mountain Bike World Championships last month with a 20th place finish.
“The addition of McConneloug to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team further demonstrates the depth of American cycling at the international level and our medal potential,” commented USA Cycling Director of Athletics and Team Leader Pat McDonough. “Of the remaining candidates on a very
talented Long Team, McConneloug has consistently illustrated an ability to contend for medals or otherwise raise the level of our team’s performance in major international races. This Olympic Team makes the 2008 squad one of the strongest in recent memory.”
