URBAN CYCLOCROSS SERIES BONELLI PARK FINALE

Start/finish: On the left Single Speed rider Miguel Sutter in the fresh 2007/2008 Uban Cyclocross Champion's Jersey; Triathletix teammates Anna Wills, Jennifer Kramer and Konrad Ribeiro.

Holeshot: MBA's Eddie Arnet in the defending champion jersey and series leader yellow socks. Greg Castaneda (650), Johnny Dalton (648), David Gibson (649) and Bob Meeker (647) chase down the mountain biker.

Us against them: Eddie throttles his Titus 96'er out of a grass corner while Greg Casteneda and Robert Meeker chase on CX bikes.

Registration and free refreshment: Registration boss Lisa is hidden deep in the back. Number 321 is Single Speed B rider David Miser.

Top women: Series Champion Lana Atchley over the Bonelli double barriers. Dorothy Wong re-mounts while her Cicle teammate Carolyn Popovic (hidden behind Lana) eventually took the Bonelli race.

Flat versus drop: The Urban Cyclocross Series is very friendly for mountain bikes. Put some fast tires on and give the roadies fits!

RBA: Top SoCal 40-44 Expert Robert Kmetz in his new Sho-Air/RockNRoad/Road Bike Action Magazine team kit. Road Bike Action is MBA's sister publication.

Pro men: The Bonelli event started midway through a one mile stretch of paved road. The return half of the course was on rolly, grassy parkland.

Midpack pro's first lap: The barriers were too high and too close together for anyone with good bunnyhopping skill to jump and open a gap.

Experience: In the end longtime SoCal CX Champ Brent Prenzlow stole the show. Mark Noble is in 3rd and Frederick Bottger 4th.

Back On Track Productions ran a UCI Cyclocross Calendar final event that was also used to cap off the 2007/2008 edition of the Urban Cyclocross series. We here at MBA have raced the Urban Cyclocross series on mountain bikes for over 15 years.

The Urban Cyclocross circuits have been the most unique in the world. In the past we have raced through the Olympic Velodrome at Dominguez Hills; a sand pit next to a storm drain in Torrance; the lunch quad, running track, shop classes, bungalows, and hillside perimeter around Palos Verdes High; and best yet, through the homeless camp in and around Reggie the Alligator's home at Lake Machado.

The circuit at Bonelli Park in San Dimas, CA was fast and better suited for true cyclocross rigs. The two mile layout was half asphalt and half grass with a few sections of gravel and one set of double barriers.

We used the same Titus 96'er project bike that we ran to win the 2006/2007 title. For cyclocross we run the NoTubes wheelset with The Crow tubeless tires at 30 psi. The bike is holding up extremely well. After upgrading to the FRM Airway fork we reviewed the month following the original November, 2006 test, we are still running all of the original components; even the Shimano XTR-level, CN-7701 chain (it still has lots of life left). The bike has 95 hours total.
