The 2011 cross-country race season officially got underway Saturday March 12th at Bonelli Park in San Dimas, California. Men and women professional riders competed in the the US Cup Pro Triple Crown, an event that is also the first round of the USA Cycling Pro XCT Series. The big winners were Cannondale's Jeremiah Bishop who made a last-lap attack to reel in and pass Sid Taberlay who had led the event from the gun. The women's event was won by Team Luna Chix's Georgia Gould, who decimated the women's field.

The only competition Georgia Gould had all day was from the course marshal's motorcycle. The women's event drew a small field and the racing was the worst in recent memory. Riders seemed to be content in their position and most of the position changes came due to flat tires or mechanicals.

Specialized's Lea "Don't call me Harley" Davidson returned after sitting out 2010 to recover from an injury. She took second place. What does that tell you about the rest of the field who did not sit out last year?

If the men's race had been one lap shorter, this man would have won. Sid Taberlay went hard from the gun but ran out of gas on the last lap.

Jeremiah Bishop waited patiently until the last lap and showed he had been holding back.

Todd Wells leads the first lap.

The course layout was awesome because spectators could see tons of action from one location and riders got treated to some nasty technical sections that would have been right at home on a motocross track. The racing action continues Sunday afternoon. The pros will be competing in the short track event after a morning filled with amatuer cross-country events.
