Gee Atherton & Emmeline Ragot Win Crankworx Canadian Open Downhill

The seventh annual Crankworx Festival in Whistler wrapped up this evening with the Canadian Open downhill race. If asked to describe the Open downhill course in two words, they’d be steep and dangerous. It’s nearly unfathomable how so much technical terrain was covered in just a few minutes by today’s top pro racers. Gee Atherton has been on fire this summer, and took the pro men’s win today. For the women, reigning World Champ Emmeline Ragot bested a field of just six pro women for the victory.

It’s a sign of things to come.

Whether racing on wet and sloppy courses in Europe, or the dry, loose conditions of the Open course, Gee Atherton has been at the top of his game. He won today’s Canadian Open by over 5 seconds.

Trek's Justin Leov vuvuzela'd his way to third place in the pro men's field.

World Champion Emmeline Ragot won the women’s downhill event, beating just five other racers. The DNS roster included two other World Champions, Rachel Atherton and Melissa Buhl.

Lewis Buchanan was flying all week. He put down an impressive run for second place.

“Just don’t crash at Heckler Rock. Just don’t crash at Heckler Rock. Just don’t crash at Heckler Rock. Oh @%*#!”

RockShox’s Tyler Morland was a force behind shaping the Canadian Open downhill event into what it has become today. He put down a quality run for eighth place.

No one’s stock is rising like 20-year-old Eliot Jackson’s of Southern California. Despite the fact you can count the number of downhill races he’s ever entered on one hand, he finished 14th today, and beat 80 other pro downhillers.

Rookie pro Troy Brosnan has to be satisfied with his fourth place result.

Remember in high school when you were on spring break and you heard stories about the guy who drank too much and fell off the balcony at (fill in the blank) hotel? Apparently this guy was home schooled. Remember that time at Crankworx when that guy on the chairlift…

Stevie Smith was crushing the course in practice, carrying speed like no one else in the bottom tree section. A flat tire at the top of the course ended his race run prematurely.

Whistler yokel, err local, Kenny Smith floats down Heckler Rock. His race run didn’t go as planned, finishing 25th.

Former U.S. National Champion Cody Warren races just part time these days, but impressively finished in 10th place among a field of World Cup regulars.

One of the bear necessities is Kokanee.
