With the absence of current World Champ Julien Absalon (France, Orbea), one could expect a change in the standings. And that is exactly what happened when Switzerland mountain bikers made an attack on Great Britain! Only two weeks before the 2008 World Championships, the Swiss Olympic XC team of Florian Vogel, Nino Schurter and Christoph Sauser dominated race 5 of the World Cup and took control of the 2008 series standings.
Switzerland confirmed its supremacy on the Fort William circuit. It was Vogel's first World Cup victory. Backed by runner-ups Schurter and Sauser, the Swiss Olympic Team made their World Championship intentions well known.
Among the ladies, Marie-Helene Premont had to finish in front of Margarita Fullana to retain the series leadership. And the Canadian has done better than that by winning the fifth World Cup of her career. Margarita Fullana took second and Sabine Spitz third.
