Hi Mountain Bike Action: I’m thirteen and into racing cross-country. I have a Marin hardtail and I want to get a lightweight race bike with full suspension priced less that $1500. I’m 6'1" and still growing so I will need a bike that will fit me when I get taller
-Sam, the beanstalk

A: You are not going to want to hear this because we can tell your heart is set on a new bike. Still, going the direction you want to take at your budget is the wrong way to go. Keep racing that Marin. For a guy your size, you will not improve your results on a dual-suspension bike at the price you can afford today. You could use some of that money to buy a lighter set of wheels and lighter tires that you will only use on race day. That investment will get you better results than a heavier dual-suspension bike that doesn’t have the features of a more expensive bike. When you save up some money or totally grow out of your Marin, you can get that dual-suspension bike with a shock that is not influenced by the rider’s weight (the Specialized Brain shock) or a shock with an adjustable ProPedal or platform setting.
