Hey Mountain Bike Action wrecking crew: Recently switched from weekend warrior to daily commuting. My helmet is getting that moldy smell from being wet all the time. Any suggestions on how to clean it?
—Dan suffering from stink head
Mountain Bike Action: Gross, Dan. You need to take care of that quickly. First, don’t leave the helmet strapped to your bike in the garage or parking facility. Take the smelly lid into your home or office and leave it where air can flow through it. A fan is the absolute best solution. Many helmet sizing pads are held in place with hook-and-loop material and are easily removable. If yours are, pull them out and place them where air can dry them, like in the sunlight or on a warm surface.
When you have a day off the bike, dunk the helmet into a sink of water and soap. Use any soap that is at the kitchen sink. Dish soap, hand soap—it doesn’t matter. Nothing is going to break down the webbing or pad material. Take the pads out of the helmet, lather up your hands with the soap and squash the pads in your hands. Then rinse them and let them air dry. The shell can be sponged off. No big secrets here.
Finally, get an extra set of sizing pads from your local bike shop and replace them from time to time.
