Max Commencal just sent us a letter recaping the 2008 race season. His namesake bike company Commencal operates high up in the Pyrenees. Not surprisingly, this company is all about
downhill. From the very beginning and originally as the legendary Sunn brand, Max has led the charge in the design of big travel bikes. He (Commencal) is responsible for the careers of some of the greatest competitors on two wheels: 12-time World Champion and BMX Olympic Champion
Anne-Caroline Chausson and Red Bull Champion
Cedric Gracia. A little less known is
Remy Absalon, brother of Olympic and World Cross-Country Champion Julien. As much as the other aforementioned riders, Remy is IT when it comes to marathon downhill. Marathon downhill is Europe’s take on Super D racing. The Euros run a big time championship series with huge fields. It’s absolute mayhem as hundreds of riders run to their bikes before descending hour’s long courses. The events are dominated by five-to-six-inch travel all-mountain bikes.
Here is the letter from Max:

Multi Marathon Downhill Champion Remy Absalon couldn’t finish his 2008 season better. The Superteam rider won the Reunion Megavalanche this weekend. After winning his ranking run, Remy made the perfect race aboard his Commencal Meta 5. Remy finished ahead of Fabien Barel and Rene Wildaber. His Olympic Champion brother, Julien, finished a deserving 5th place, proving that the world’s best cross-country rider can descend with the best.
Remys 2008 season began perfectly with an overall ranking Avalance Trophy victory. Then after a second place in the Alpe d’Huez Megavalanche, and now with this latest victory, Remy closed out what many feel is his best season yet.
It was an equally best season ever for Commencal’s Superteam…double World Downhill titles by Rachel an Gee Atherton, World Cup Downhill title by Rachel, and third place finishes in the World Cup Downhill and 4-Cross GC by Gee and brother Dan Atherton…We could not have dreamt of a better season! From mechanics, engineers, riders, welders, to managers, thanks to everybody on the Superteam!
More than ever, Commencal continues to take a stand as soon as the track begins to descend. When the way of riding and having fun become a way of living, we keep it pointed downhill!
Bonnes fetes a tous!
(Season’s Greetings!)
