COUGAR MOUNTAIN CLASSIC--SEPT 13

Organized by Eddie Arnet

Hosted by the same people who bring you the Sea Otter, the Cougar Mountain Classic offers the full slate of outdoor activity: recreational rides, clinics, kids events, running competition, and road and MTB events. Other than hosting their first ever downhill, some of the other more exclusive events included 8 hour MTB and 8 hour road competitions.

Located in Sonoma, CA, Infineon Raceway is 150 miles north of the Sea Otter. It's the same location that was used for the second NORBA race last year.

DAVID K BREAKS IN THE DOWNHILL COURSE WITH A WIN
Race reporting by Infineon Raceway's John Cardinale

David Klaassen Van Oorschot blazed the field, taking the victory in the Infineon Technologies Downhill. The KHS team rider covered the nearly two mile course in 1 minute, 52.83 seconds to claim the victory in the first ever downhill race here. The course featured a 10,000 foot vertical drop from top to bottom.

"My back tire almost slid off the cliff and that slowed me down, but aside from that it was a good run," said David K, who posted his fourth victory of the year.

"This is pretty awesome," Klaassen Van Oorschot said. "It's a world class downhill course, no doubt. I don't think this win will hit me until later. As long as they have this downhill course I'll come back every year."

The downhill event marked the debut of Cougar Mountain, which sits nearly 400 feet above the raceway and offers panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline and Golden Gate Bridge. Riders raved over the circuit's rolling terrain, challenging natural and manmade jumps, and the tricky G-force turns. Nearly 100 percent of the course can be seen from the base of the mountain, providing a spectacular view for spectators.

The Infineon Technologies Cougar Mountain Classic 8 Hours of Mountain Biking offered solo riders and four-person teams a chance to battle it out over the rolling hills of the new, scenic cross-country course. The nine mile course expands northwest of the raceway and into the vast rolling expanse of the Carneros Valley.

WORKING 9 TO 5
Michael Lee finished the 8 hour race first completing 12 laps with a time of 7h56m. "The race was tough," said Lee. "It's up and down and into the wind, and you're always working hard."

In spite of some tire issues, Arlo Buijton from Davenport, CA placed second. "The most challenging thing was fixing 3 flat tires. I even had to ride in for a few miles with a flat tire."

For the women's race, Christy Murphy from Novato, CA, got a good "pre-run" of the course when she competed in the 9.3 mile (15K) road/off-road SuperRun the day prior. She used the course knowledge to take a comfortable win in the MTB event. Christy placed second in the run.

ROAD NOTES
Eric Wohlberg (Symetrics) won the 8 Hours of Road Cycling by completing 64 laps of the 2.5 mile circuit. That's 160 miles of riding in 8 hours. Velo Bella rider Elizabeth Benishin completed 43 laps for the women's win. Glen Mitchell (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) and Karen Brems (Webcor Builders) took the road circuit race. Chad Worthen (Fleet Feet) and Maggie Visser won the 9.3 mile road/off-road run.
