"Before we get going," said Team Big Bear's Pat Follett, "I want to make sure that all you guys know the course. On the first lap you go up the Vista Ridge fire road. But on the second, third and fourth laps you will be going up the Grapevine DH Course. Although the steep sections are all rideable, you will be hating us by the fourth lap."
RAIN THREAT
Originally slated to kick off the Cal State XC Series back in March, Castaic Lake was the event that was cancelled by El Nino. The race was rescheduled for the Saturday before Easter; the only open slot left on the race calendar.
Ironically, there was again the threat of rain. But the moisture stayed up north. Come race day temperatures were back into the eighties like they're supposed to be around here.
NO TIME FOR FESTIVITIES
One would think that great weather and staging in a lush park next to a popular boating lake would have put everyone in a holdiay spirit. But it didn't.
There were no bunny suits. No easter baskets. No add-on ears. Not even an egg. Make no mistake, we were here to conquer a course.
FASTEST RIDERS AT CASTAIC
In the end everyone agreed that this was the best XC layout ever run at Castaic. It was fast. It was tough. In spots you raced ten feet above the waterline. In some spots you even raced through the water. And tomorrow was Easter.
