CAL STATE TOP TEN SPECIAL OFFER--APRIL 5

Whether we race or not, riders always engage in a bit of personal singletrack dueling. It could be a riding bud, someone you happen across, or everyone else in a group ride. Friendly competition is the great equalizer. Nothing tops being the fastest and most skilled rider. But it's a shared victory. Even to the riders who got smoked. All of us are dedicated to improving. On every ride we accomplish personal victories. Friendly competition ties us and the sport together because it's the fact that we're all out there that gives us earned respect.

Many will never have aspirations of racing the National Mountain Bike Series. That's why local racing is the lifeblood of mountain biking. It's for the weekend warrior who wants to enjoy the aura of mingling with the hardest of the hardcore local riders.

SEND US LOCAL RACE RESULTS!
We want condensed, current race reports from The Great Smokies, Colorado, New England, all 50 states! Email us a couple of paragraphs about your event and the top ten results in each category and we'll post it on our site. If you have usable photos, send them too.

Give us the name and location of the race; a few lines about weather and course conditions; then finish with a paragraph about the high points. Plug sponsors so area riders will know where to shop.

Don't think that you will get paid for this excellent service, because you won't. But look at what you're doing for the sport. It gives area riders a little extra for sweating and gets everybody revved up for local race action. Plus you might even be responsible for making yourself famous in front of millions of MBA web readers.

ON TO THE CAL STATE
Castaic Lake's treasured cross-country course opened up the eight-race California State XC Series in style. It's a brutal course with quad seizing climbs and vicious descents. At one point after an arm seizing, steeply switchbacked descent, the course parallels 20 feet above the shoreline. During the half mile breather racers get to take in anglers, water skiers and sunbathers while doing their best to stay on the narrow trail. There is no other course like it.

CASTAIC LAKE COURSE STATS
Each lap of the 6.7 mile course gave a total of 1269 feet of climbing. The longest climb was the steep, 550 foot grind from the lake to the green picnic table. A climbing grade of 10% was the average, with a 25% pitch being the steepest. Mid-eighty temps, dehydration and muscle cramping led to a lot of pushing, even from many of the class winners.
