BONELLI PARK SOCAL STATE OPENER

Bonelli Park in San Dimas, CA was the first stop on the California State Cross-Country and Super D Series calender. This year eight races will decide the SoCal State XC and Team Champions. Bonelli's 9 mile loop gives 1500 feet of climbing per lap. The circuit has a little bit for everyone: fast fire road descends; numerous singletrack, technical ascents and long, back breaking firewood climbs. To culminate is a super fast, fire road descent and a 200 yard finish sprint. The heat reached well into the 80's, making many riders suffer even more. It's winter, remember?

The Platinum Performance team was out in force. The team's goal this season is to ruin Sho-Air while defending the XC Coed title for the fourth straight year. Team Sho-Air did show a large presence in an effort to bring the Coed title to their camp. Good luck! .

PLATINUM PERFORMANCE LOVE
The Platinum Performance team had 30 riders in various divisions battling it out for individual title runs. After the dust cleared, the last Sho-Air rider had left with his tail tucked between the legs, and the last car left the park, Team Platinum was standing bold with ten 1st place wins, two 2nd place finishes and one 3rd place finish.

Jason Hannon showed that his skills on the road carry over onto the dirt with a 1st place victory in the very competitive Expert 40-44 class. New riders Amanda Schaper, Chase Schoen and Adam Poytress showed why they are hot picks for the Platinum roster with wins in their respective fields. New comer mountain biker, veteran road star Mark Fannell won his first race in the Cal State Series. Nine-year-old Renny Takeda showed why he is tough as nails by completing a nine mile loop with lots of climbing and 85 degree temps! He won the 10-and Under class. Terry Dalh is on track for winning another State Champion title with his first win in the series. Ian Mcfarlane won the Expert 18-and-Under class even after missing the turn for the finish on the last lap. He ended up riding an extra mile into the course before realizing the mistake! New father, by only days, Luke Werkhoven won the Clydsdale 34-and-Under class with ease! Gary Douville proved that he can win at any discipline on two wheels; He captured a win in the Expert 30-34 class even after a chain break! New comer Stephanie Rivera pulled of a 2nd place finish in the Beginner Women 45-49 class. Platinum Team Captain Todd Booth had a come-from-behind, 2nd place finish in another very competitive Expert 35-39 class. At one point in the race he was in 6th place with the 5th place rider out of sight. Doug Ulback had a battle in the tough Expert 40-44 class. He pulled a solid 3rd place finish. Ron Takeda captured a time that is fast enough to win most classes, but in the highly competitive Expert 45-49 class it only gave him a 4th place standing. This class is stacked with riders such as National Champ Johnny O'Mara, Dermot Carroll, and David Sullivan. I would hate to be 46 years old! Shigy RMZ Suzuki moved up to the Sport division and still hammered out a respectable 4th place finish in the 50-54 class. Out of retirement, Jonathon Luckett came back to place 4th in the Sport 40-44 class.  Another first timer on a mountain bike, Mariann Thomas, showed that her running background carried through in the endurance department with a 4th place finish in the Beginner Women's 45-49 class. Downhill skills are next on her learning curve! Mark Luke grabbed a respectable 4th place finish in the Expert 50-54 class.

Just out. Platinum is up on Sho-Air by a slim 5 points in the Coed team standings. It will be a tight season with four dominant teams going after the title: Platinum, Sho-Air, Cyclopath and Coates Cyclery. Team riders are soon going to be showing up with full body armor! Well, Sho-Air might also show up with a list of excuses...
