The Bigfoot Classic Mountain Bike Race has been a Humboldt County, California tradition since the 80's. When local event promoter Team Bigfoot took over the race in 2001, it became a benefit for the Humboldt County Search and Rescue Team.
In recent years the event has taken place on Green Diamond property at Bald Mountain, near Lord Ellis Summit. The Search and Rescue Team members are on site and ready to assist in the event of any mishap. "Thankfully, the team ended up just enjoying two days of race spectating," said team commander Rich Nicholson. "Not one injury to deal with. We like that," he added.
The $1000 raised for the team this year increases the total amount donated to them so far to $3,080. "I love being able to help the SAR Team," said Vic Armijo, CEO of Team Bigfoot. "Few people realize that they're all volunteers, that they pay for their own equipment and training, and that what funding they do get from the state is very minimal."
Team Bigfoot and the Search and Rescue Team would like to thank the racers who competed, and the many local sponsors, including Adventure's Edge, Joe Mello Auto Repair and Revolution Bicycles. "We especially want to thank Green Diamond," Armijo added, "without their generous support, we couldn't have a race at all." To which Nicholson added, "Being there has been very positive for the team. Recently when we had a call to search for a lost hunter most of our team members were already familiar with the roads and trail network, which was key in having our search end successfully."
