BEST GROUP RIDES IN COLORADO--JULY 10


1. OVER THE EDGE SPORTS SALES
We vary from the Kokopelli to the Bookcliff area. Kid rides are 6 p.m. Tuesday and the regular outing is 6 p.m. Thursday. Group size ranges between 20 and 30 and the pace is recreational. Town: Fruita. Contact: (970) 858-7220; www.fruitamountainbike.com.

2. RUBY CANYON CYCLES
An at-the-trailhead, 6:30 p.m. Thursday Lunch Loop meet. The area has many different loops and the group of 5 to 15 links together a different ride each time. The pace is usually aggressive. Town: Grand Junction. Contact: (970) 241-0141; www.rubycanyoncycles.com.

3. COLORADO CUSTOM CYCLES
The Tuesday and Thursday rides gather 6 p.m. at the shop. The local JQS area has arid, high desert singletrack. Two miles from the shop there's a 4000 foot climb to the top of Roan Cliffs. Town: Rifle. Contact: (970) 625-6188; www.coloradocustomcycles.com.

4. AJAX BIKE & SPORTS
Mushroom Rock has 600 feet of vert and a huge web of trails. Or climb 1000 feet from Forest Hollow to Boy Scout and on to a blazing downhill back into Glenwood Springs. The rides meet 6 p.m. Tuesday. Town: Carbondale. Contact: (970) 963-0128; www.ajaxbikeandsports.com.

5. AJAX BIKE & SPORTS II
This shop hooks up with the Carbondale store for the Tuesday ride. Another trail they do is 1500 feet up Red Mountain to the series of singletracks on top. The view from above is breathtaking. Town: Basalt. Contact: (970) 927-3760; www.ajaxbikeandsports.com.

6. SNOWMASS SPORTS
A new Monday evening ride that starts from the shop and heads to the East Government trail. The group takes the trail to Buttermilk and then back. It's challenging singletrack with short, steep climbs. Town: Snowmass Village. Contact: (970) 923-3567; www.snowmasssports.com.

7. GENE TAYLORS SPORTING GOODS
"We're ready to ride anytime," says the shop. Options include the top of the ski hill, the Government Trail or the Rim Trail. The later is a 7 mile loop around the rim of a mountain overlooking town. Town: Snowmass Village. Contact: (970) 923-4336; www.genetaylors.com.

8. ASPEN VELO
"The pace is easy up Smuggler, but we start moving as soon as we get to the Hunter Creek singletrack. We follow the valley to Four Corners and the down the 700 foot Sunnyside drop." The ride starts 6 p.m. Sunday. Town: Aspen. Contact: (970) 925-1495; www.aspenvelo.com.

9. TIMBERLINE CYCLE CENTER
A tour shop where the employees just don't get enough riding. "Someone from work is going out every night," they say. We do a medley of rides at Buttermilk, Hunter Creek, Van Horn, Hobbitt and Sunnyside. Town: Aspen. Contact: (970) 925-3586; www.timberlinebike.com.

10. TENTH MOUNTAIN HUT TOUR SYSTEM
Timberline Cycle Center does daily tours in and around the local area, including the Hut System. The tours start at $80, including lunch. They're an Elseworth dealer and $20 will rent an Isis for two hours. Town: Aspen. Contact: (970) 925-3586; www.timberlinebike.com.

11. AJAX BIKE & SPORTS III
This ride starts 4 p.m. Sunday from the shop. The group splits into fast and easy packs. They do the Hunter Creek loop, Four Corners and Sunnyside. It's a 35 minute climb to Four Corners. Town: Aspen. Contact: (970) 925-7662; www.ajaxbikeandsports.com.

12. SORE SADDLE CYCLERY
Rides leave the shop 8 p.m. Tuesday and 5 p.m. Sunday. On each trip the group of five will take a different trail around the Emerald Mtn. area. There's 1500 feet of climbing available. Town: Steamboat Springs. Contact: (970) 879-1675; www.soresaddle.com.

13. MOUNTAIN PEDALER OF VAIL
When it's hot the ride group of 10 to 20 carpools up the valley to the cooler alpine area. In the fall and spring the ride is on one of the numerous loops right out the shop door. Meet 6 p.m. Wednesday. Town: Eagle. Contact: (970) 328-3478; www.mountainpedaler.com.

14. WOMEN'S RIDE
The Kind Cyclist hosts this ride 5:30 p.m Thursday. The group of 3 to 10 usually ride Beaver Creek or other nearby trails. A very fun, informal ride that could include a cafe stop along the way. Town: Edwards. Contact: (970) 926-1260.

15. THE KIND CYCLIST
Ultra 100 training sessions are run from June to August. Show at the shop 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Then hammer out a different section of the race course. The course climbs up to 10000 feet at Muddy Pass. Town: Edwards. Contact: (970) 926-1260.

16. VAIL BIKE SERVICE
Vail Bike is the former promoter of the seven race Mountain Challenge and currently a title sponsor. The series begins in May and runs every other week. Race time is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Expect 500 riders. Town: Vail. Contact: (970) 476-1233.

17. SKI BASE WHEEL BASE
"We are at the base of the mountain and runs are open daily. There is always someone to ride with." Both a gondola and lift are open. "There are runs everywhere -- you can spend a week here and not get bored." Town: Vail. Contact: (970) 476-5799; www.vailskibase.com.

18. VAIL BIKE TECH
These are daily, $80 tours for the elite. The tour van brings you and three others to the start spot and a tour guide takes you along a paved and dirt ride through Shrine Pass or Vail Pass. Picnic lunch included. Town: Vail. Contact: (970) 476-5995; www.vailbiketech.com.

19. GREAT DIVIDE SPORTS
Colorado's official women's ride. Show 6 p.m. in front of the Winter Park Sport Shop at Kings Crossing. Ride size is up to 35 people. Dinner and drinks after the ride. Don't miss the Hot Sulpher Springs trip. Town: Granby. Contact: (970) 887-9449.

20. BEAVER SPORTS
Meet 6 p.m. Thursday at the shop and enjoy the unlimited local riding. The 20 riders often hammer out one of the six XC race courses. There is always a group that hangs back and pedals at a more casual pace. Town: Winter Park. Contact: (888) 234-6259; (970) 726-1092.

21. ROCK 'N ROAD CYCLERY
Friday, 9 p.m. at Lory and at the shop 8 a.m. Sunday. Group size averages ten riders. The weekend session is on Pine Ridge, Maxwell, Shoreline and Michaud. Lights required on the Friday ride. Town: Ft. Collins. Contact: (970) 221-2869; www.rocknroadcyclery.com.

22. LEE CYCLERY NORTH
The typically Sunday afternoon rides will meet at the shop, trailhead or an eatery. Ride locations are changed every week, but will usually take place at Horsetooth, Lory or Young's Gulch. Town: Ft. Collins. Contact: (970) 482-6006; www.leecyclery.com.

23. LEE CYCLERY SOUTH

24. FRONT RANGE RIDER MAP BOOK

25. BIKE PEDDLER
Says the shop, "We're into road right now, but we switch to off-road in the fall. We organize the ride 5 p.m. Thursday and carpool to Horsetooth, Hall's or White Ranch. There's ten riders and a no-drop rule." Town: Greeley. Contact: (970) 356-3663.

26.. UNIVERSITY BIKE SHOP

27. FULL CYCLE

28. SPORTS GARAGE
No lycra, but costumes welcome on this 80-rider, Thursday cruiser night. A light and bell are required. Take a couple of hours to explore downtown aboard your old beach cruiser or Electra. Town: Boulder. Contact: (303) 447-7274; www.sportsgarage.net.

29. CUTTING EDGE SPORTS
"Our typical ride has a 1500 foot climb to a good downhill," they say. Ride size is up to eight people. Meet 5 p.m. Sunday and carpool 1/2 hour to one of the numerous trails in the area. Town: Boulder. Contact: (303) 413-0228; www.cuttingedgeco.com.

30. THE FIX
This can be anywhere from a three to ten hour ride. Meet 8 a.m. Monday at the bus depot. Journey with up to 30 others to the Netherlands and link up chronicle singletracks with up to 3000 feet of climbing. Town: Boulder. Contact: (303) 939-8349; www.thefix101.com.

31. RESORT DH SESSIONS
Meet at the shop 8 a.m. Sunday and Monday. The group is on the mountain by 10 a.m. and do DH runs until 4 p.m. Ride Beaver Creek, Vail, Keystone and more. Beaver Creek is currently THE SPOT to ride. Town: Boulder. Contact: (303) 939-8349; www.thefix101.com.

32. BOULDER BIKESMITH
Monday at the shop, 6 p.m. rides. An easy social ride at Betasso Preserve, Marshall Mesa, Foothill Trail or many other options. The mostly singletrack rides have up to 1000 foot climbs. Town: Boulder. Contact: (303) 443-1132; www.boulderbikesmith.com.

33. CUTTING EDGE SPORTS II

34. THE SINGLETRACK FACTORY

35. DENVER CRITICAL MASS
Up to 300 riders meet 6 p.m. at the Civic Center Park the last Friday of every month. Then the mass of cyclists rides through Downtown Denver and on to Auraria Campus. The more riders the better. Town: Denver. Contact: (303) 733-3334; www.singletrackfactory.com.

36. DENVER SPOKE
Ride with Foes Sales Rep Kent Setsma or regional DH champ Gerrit Bartlet. Morning lift, shuttle and dirt missions can happen any day, but the Sunday morning Apex Park ride is always a definite meet. Town: Denver. Contact: (303) 777-1720.

37. DENVER SPOKE XC RIDES
Wednesday, 5 p.m. meets at a Front Range trailhead. White Ranch and Indian Peaks have 4000-plus feet of vertical gain. The five riders go out hard and for up to four hours. Special non-race weekend epics. Town: Denver. Contact: (303) 777-1720.

38. HANDLEBAR AND GRILL RESTAURANT
Show 10 a.m. Sunday at the Handlebar Grill. Up to 15 people pedal to one of numerous trails for an easy, three hour ride. The restaurant also sponsors the six-race, Spirit of the Rockies Series. Town: Denver. Contact: (303) 778-6761; www.handlebarandgrill.com.

39. WHEAT RIDGE CYCLERY
Log on to get the current ride location and intensity. It can either be a hammer session with the shop team or a casual ride with 40 others. The ride starts 8:30 a.m. Saturday or Sunday. Town: Wheat Ridge. Contact: (303) 425-3680; www.ridewrc.com.

40. BIG RING CYCLES
The 6 p.m. Thursday trailhead meet is listed on the website. A different ride spot every week. The 10 to 15 riders go out for 1-1/2 hours. You can usually expect more of a moderate pace. Town: Golden. Contact: (303) 216-2000; www.bigringcycles.com.

41. WESTSIDE CYCLING & FITNESS
After work, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Sunday missions meet at the trailhead or a carpool rendezvous. Ride the Front Range singletrack on very mountainous terrain. Six riders and an intermediate pace. Town: Lakewood. Contact: (303) 237-1115; www.westsidecycling.

42. GREEN MOUNTAIN SPORTS
Hook up with up to 20 riders and enjoy a different Front Range section of singletrack each time. The ride starts 6:30 p.m. Thursday from the shop. Panaracer XCs are one of the local tire favorites. Town: Lakewood. Contact: (303) 987-8758; www.greenmountainsports.com.

43. TREADS BICYCLE OUTFITTERS
The ride is different every weekend. Cross country outings take place on the Front Range. Urban sessions are downtown and on the DU campus. Special downhill shuttle trips. Up to 20 riders. Town: Englewood. Contact: (303) 781-1162; www.treads.com.

44. RED ROCKS CYCLES
This 6 a.m. Wednesday ride has had over 50 people. Mt. Falcon is right behind the shop -- 2-1/2 miles straight up to the singletrack loops at the top. Numerous other fast or technical ride spots available. Town: Morrison. Contact: (303) 697-8833; www.redrockscyclery.com.

45. TREADS BICYCLE OUTFITTERS WATERMELON RIDE
Who will be the one to lug a watermelon from the top of Kenosha Pass 3000 feet to the top of Georgia Pass? The watermelon rider gets to pick next year's melon carrier. An annual ride in July. Town: Aurora. Contact: (303) 750-1671; www.treads.com.

46. LITTLETON CYCLERY & FITNESS
Impromptu Wednesday and Friday outings that meet 6:30 a.m. The group of three to nine rides for a couple of hours and gets back in time to open the shop. The ride usually fractures into fast and easy groups. Town: Littleton. Contact: (303) 798-5033; www.littletoncyclery.com.

47. BIG KAHUNA CYCLERY

48. BIKE SOURCE

49. CTS FUND RAISER RIDE

50. TREADS BICYCLE OUTFITTERS URBAN ASSAULT
A Wednesday evening ride out of one of the three Treads stores or at another meet location. Head downtown to the concrete jungle or hit the local skate park. All types of bikes, unicycles and people welcome. Town: Parker. Contact: (303) 690-2900; www.treads.com.

51. CASTLE ROCK BICYCLE COMPANY
Coined as a "mostly recreational" ride, this is a 10 a.m. Sunday ride that carpools from the shop. Drive out to the great Front Range singletrack or ride at Deer Creek Canyon. Fifteen people. Town: Castle Rock. Contact: (303) 688-1722; www.castlerockbikes.com.

52. ZIPPY WHO DOO EXTREMES
Four or so riders drive up to Uncompahgre Plateau for a fun jam session on the high desert terrain. The trail is a mix of single and two track with 300 foot climbs. "We're pretty relaxed," says the shop. Town: Montrose. Contact: (970) 252-0869

53. THE TUNE UP
The off-road rides start in the fall. Says the shop, "We often ride the 21 mile Rage in the Sage course. There's 1200 feet of climbing per lap. The ride always turns into a race." Ten to 30 people. Town: Gunnison. Contact: (970) 641-0285.

54. TOMICHI CYCLES
"I work too hard to ride anymore," says shop owner Bill. "Hartman Rock is the local Gem." The shop is located at the base of the Crested Butte Valley is always full of cyclists. Rides can happen any day. Town: Gunnison. Contact: (970) 641-9069.

55. ABSOLUTE BIKES
Show 12 p.m. Tuesday at the shop. "There are trails everywhere in our area," they say. "We generally go on the more moderate singletrack, but occasionally throw in some ultra-aggressive surprises." Town: Salida. Contact: (719) 539-9295; www.absolutebikes.com.

56. TEAM TELECYCLE
Says the shop: "There are hundreds of miles of trail right out our door." The ride starts 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Expect 3000 to 4000 feet of climbing, a medium to fast pace and up to 15 riders. Town: Woodland Park. Contact: (719) 687-6165; www.teamtelecycle.com.

57. JUST RIDING ALONG
Call for a ride schedule update. Meet at the shop and either ride the limitless singletrack outside the door or carpool to a special location. Night rides also available. All rider skills welcome. Town: Manitou Springs. Contact: (719) 685-0127.

58. WEDNESDAY URBAN ASSAULT
Meet 7 p.m. at Just Riding Along. From there ride just 3/4 mile and through the Garden of the Gods. Then head to downtown Colorado Springs and back. Ride size is 15 to 30. Lights recommended. Town: Manitou Springs. Contact: (719) 685-0127.

59. DOWNHILL SHUTTLE RUNS
This fresh, new shop is quickly positioning themselves as THE DH/FR specialists. They usually go to Cheyenne Canyon. The hot setup is a Rocky Mountain RM7 with Intense 909 tires. Town: Manitou Springs. Contact: (719) 685-0127.

60. TED'S BIKE SHOP
This is a recreational ride with up to ten riders. Show at the shop 6 p.m. Thursday. The group usually rides the 1000 acres of singletrack at Palmer Park. Five to ten riders and a social pace. Town: Colorado Springs. Contact: (719) 473-6915.

61. GREAT DIVIDE SKI, BIKE & HIKE
During the fall they hold 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday outings. The ride meets at the Greenway Nature Center. It's a dirt road on rolling terrain that goes around the reservoir. Ride size is 10 to 25 people. Town: Pueblo. Contact: (719) 546-2453.

62. WORLD CUP DH SESSIONS
How about doing some runs on the World Cup course? You can pedal your downhill bike from Paragon Ski & Sport to the gondola. The course has 1150 feet of vertical descending. Many other runs also available. Town: Telluride. Contact: (970) 728-4525; www.pargontelluride.com.

63. PARAGON SKI & SPORT DH
"Our ride schedule is very informal," says Paragon. "We are surrounded by expert DH trails. The gondola is free and we do a bunch of runs." The local downhill junkies meet Sunday afternoon at the shop. Town: Telluride. Contact: (970) 728-4525; www.pargontelluride.com.

64. PARAGON SKI & SPORT XC
From town to the top of the gondola is a nice 2000 foot climb. If that's not enough you can take the Wasatch Trail to the top elevation of 13500 feet. That's a total gain of 5000 feet. Town: Telluride. Contact: (970) 728-4525; www.pargontelluride.com

65. TELLURIDE SPORTS
Guided tours are $35 for four hours. We ride up to the Bridal Vail Falls or do a loop on the Wasatch and Bear Creek Trails. There's a ton of riding off the top of the gondola. Rentals available. Town: Telluride. Contact: (970) 728-4477; www.teuluridesports.com.

66. TELLURIDE OUTSIDE
The daily guided tours start at $60 for half a day. Full day custom tours with a lunch are $115. One of the favorite rides is to start at the top of Lizard Head Pass and work down the trail for 19 miles. Town: Telluride. Contact: (970) 728-3895; www.tellurideoutside.com.

67. CAMP RED CLOUD
A family challenge center that offers week long training programs that start at $300. The Red Cloud Racing Team trains four days a week and races on the weekend. Loaner bikes are available. Town: Lake City. Contact: (970) 944-2625; www.campredcloud.org.

68. KOKOPELLI BIKE AND BOARD
Call to see where the 6 p.m. Tuesday meet will be. The shop rides from town down to 5500 feet and then back up to 10000 feet. They say that Cortez is Colorado's best kept secret singletrack spot. Ten to 15 riders. Town: Cortez. Contact: (970) 565-4408.

69. DURANGO CYCLERY
These 6 p.m. Thursday rides meet at the shop. The group of six to ten cyclist pedal out the door to the local singletrack. Expect heavy climbing and a "pretty fast" pace. Most of the locals are on FSR bikes. Town: Durango. Contact: (970) 247-0747.

70. SECOND GEAR SPORTS
Second Gear holds an alternating road and off-road Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday ride schedule. Once a month out of town rides including special Moab trips. The rides cater more towards casual cyclists. Town: Durango. Contact: (970) 247-4511.

71. KRISTI MOUNTAIN SPORTS
"Thursday is for mountain bikes." Meet 6 p.m. at the entrance to the Limekilm. We connect all the loops for 28 miles of riding and 3000 vertical feet of climbing. Group size is three to eight. Town: Alamosa. Contact: (719) 589-9759; www.slvoutdoor.com.
