Shimano XTR Race Dyna-Sys Crankset

Q: Have a Pivot Mach 5.7 Carbon with Shimano XT Dynasys 38/26 chainrings. Is it possible for me to exchange the 26-tooth chainring for a 24-tooth ring?
—Marqui, who needs a lower gear

A: That’s a trick question. Yes, it is possible because the bolt pattern to the crankarm is the same; however, it won’t work correctly. The chainrings on the Shimano two-ring crank are designed to work together as a matched pair. The front derailleur moves the chain from the smaller ring where it is “caught” by the bigger ring and guided by a series of ramps and pins on the chainrings. Change only one ring and those ramps and pins end up in the wrong place. You will also notice that not all the chainring teeth are the same shape. They are different to help the shifting performance.

You will lose the crisp shifting performance that makes a 2x10 drivetrain so awesome, and chances are you will be more prone to dropping a chain while shifting if you mix and match rings.
