Over the Big Bear weekend Siemens Cannondale was extra happy with David Tinker Juarez. That's because he didn't get his factory Scalpel too dirty. After 12 laps Tinker was so far ahead that he simply waited at the finish and preserved his bike. Tinker's 50 minute laps were fast enough that after only ten hours it was mathematically impossible for anyone to beat him.
STANDOUTS
*The next fastest rider at the summit was San Diego local Tony Smith, who finished second overall on a single speed! What kills the one gear riders on the Big Bear course are the long descents and extended flat stretches. That's what makes Tony's 55 minute lap average more impressive than ever.
*Check out top solo woman Monique Sawicki's time. The Warrior Society rider had the chance to put in one more lap, but opted out because she already had a three lap lead. If Monique had ridden that extra lap she would have finished as the fifth fastest overall solo rider.
*To finish 16 laps in 12 hours the team of Paul Freiwald, Todd Stephenson, Brad Stephenson and Sean Donovan averaged 45 minute laps. Altogether the team covered 128 miles and climbed 19,200 feet.
*Check out how close the fourth, fifth and sixth fastest four man downhill teams finished. Only 23 seconds separated the three teams after 12 straight hours of downhilling.
*In total, downhill team winners Jermaine Brown, Shawn Johnson, Rich Houseman and Gerry Cody descended 80 miles and 62,500 feet.
So how hard did it rain? Hard enough for the race to be put on hold and racers to take cover while the lightning passed. Terry Martin stood dry long enough to capture the action by digits.
