APRIL 19--ORANGE COUNTY RIDE INFO

THE SHARE POKER RIDE
What: SHARE Mountain Bike Club Annual Poker Ride
When: Saturday, May 7; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: The SHARE Mountain Bike Club is pleased to announce this year's Poker Ride at El Moro State Park in Orange County, CA.
Wisdom: This year SHARE will collaborate with the Arthritis Foundation to stage the event. This event is intended to raises awareness and funds to fight arthritis, the nations leading cause of disability. In addition, proceeds help underwrite SHARE club programs including trail maintenance projects and the promotion of responsible mountain biking.

The cost of the event is $55 for individual or $100 for teams of two (team riders combine their cards to make one winning poker hand). This year over 200 riders are expected to participate. The rider(s) who collect the winning poker hand will compete for a grand prize of a weekend for two in Las Vegas at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino. In addition to the grand prize there are additional prizes for 2nd through 4th place along with opportunity drawings, complimentary breakfast, music and fun. There will also be a ride workshop for kids 5-11 for a nominal fee of $5 and a bike clinic hosted by a local bike shop.

How the Poker Ride Works: Each participant receives a map showing the location of six check points in El Moro State Park. The riders must check in at a minimum of five check points to qualify. At each check point they will select from a common deck of playing cards. Those qualifying will play their hands for a chance to win. The course is an intermediate 10 mile loop with a vertical climb of approximately 2400 feet.

THE PATH BIKE SHOP "BIKES AND BEERS" RIDE
What: An annual tradition of riding and socializing.
When: Sunday, May, 15 at 8:30 a.m.
Where: The Path Bike Shop parking lot.
Wisdom: Meet at 8:30 a.m. for coffee and rally in the parking lot 'till around 9 a.m.. Ride ends at The Tustin Brewery where we will hang out on the patio and they will give us a deal on beer and pizza.

Disclaimer: Mountain biking can be dangerous. The Path, it's ownership, staff and affiliates are not responsible for you on this ride. This is a casual event. There will be no official ride leaders, or course marshals. The course is not marked, nor is it specific. There are many variations, and some people will do extra loops. If you do not know the area, ride with someone who does. If you need to be introduced to someone who knows the area, and/or who will be riding at your level, just let us know.

The general course: Exit The Path parking lot and make a right on B Street. Make a right on Irvine Blvd. Left on Tustin Ranch Road. Left on Pioneer. Follow the horse trails to the Peters Canyon South entrance. Through Peters Canyon. Up Jamboree to Santiago Oaks. Up the three spiteful hills. Down towards Irvine Park. Back to The Tustin Brewery.

Note: It is recommended that you ride to this event. If you are driving, it is a good idea to leave your car with a change of cloths in the parking lot of The Tustin Brewery before the ride.

THE WARRIOR'S SOCIETY TOAD FESTIVAL
What: Ride and participate in games of chance and skill to win prizes!
When: Saturday, May 21; 7:30 registration, 8 a.m. start (be on time, we will not wait).
Where: At the regular location in the Santa Ana's. We will be staging out of O'Neill Park.
Wisdom: As is obvious from the date change we've moved this event to May from October to avoid fire closures that may occur in the fall. Participation will be limited to 225 riders. Register now, no same day sign-ups!

Course Description: 27.5 +- miles, 5,000 +- of elevation gain. This event is intended for high novice and above riders. Participants will be responsible to carry all food and water needed to complete the ride. There will be no sag support (except in case of total breakdown or emergency). Support personnel will be stationed at 5 rest stops along the course. Riders will compete in games of chance and skill (darts, horseshoes, helmet toss and Blackjack cards). Those with the highest combined score will win prizes. You must make the checkpoints in a reasonable time or you will not be allowed to continue. We have many prizes to award so a high percentage of participants will win something (tires, a shock, bars, stems, gift certificates and other accessories). Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the event. Root beer floats will be served at the West Horse Thief game stop. The County of Orange Parks charges a $5 park entrance fee so carpooling is encouraged. Camping is $15 a night and you can camp in our reserved group area. Campsites outside the group area are on a first come basis; the park does not take reservations. The park has showers and don't forget to bring a beach chair to relax after the event. Terrain Description: (1) Start at Picnic area to Holy Jim Trail Head--a small amount of pavement with 5 miles of fire road. (2) Holy Jim Trail Head to Main Divide--6 miles of steep single track climbing with multiple stream crossings. (3) Holy Jim Trail to Trabuco Canyon Trail--6 miles of rutted fire road with steep climbs and descents. You get root beer floats at the game stop at West Horse Thief. (4) Trabuco Canyon Trail to Holy Jim Parking area--5 miles of down hill, technical single track with stream crossings with 1/2 of a mile of fire road. (5) Holy Jim Parking area to Picnic area--5 miles of fire road and a small amount of pavement.
