APRIL 12--TRANS PORTUGAL


The race date is June 23 to July 3, 2005. Cross Portugal in 11 days, north to south; finishing in Sagres, the southern west point of Europe. The total distance is 745.7 miles through forest tracks, gravel roads and steep singletrack over cliffs. Each participant follows a virtual marked course, using the screen of a GPS receiver. Here are some stage facts:

*Shortest stage - 39.8 mi
*Longest stage - 100.7 mi
*Average stage - 67.1 mi
*Total vertical - 69,895'

Last year Frederico Brancao won in a time of 54:37:36. That's an average of 12.8 mph. Sixty-plus year old American Cal Burgart placed third at 1:00:48. Finishing behind in fourth was SoCal endurance racer Darby Fultz at 1:39:40. Paul Magnotto came in sixth at 4:11:00. Jacquie Phelan was first women in eighth overall at 11:33:28.
