You know that you have entered Heaven the moment you drop into the Keyesville Recreation Area. Just a rocks's throw away, the still pools of clear water offer a surrealistic view of Kern River. "Did I bring my fishing tackle?" "No, stop daydreaming," one tells himself. "I'm here to race mountain bikes."
But the dreaming continues again as soon as your knobs hit dirt -- This as good as riding can get.
KEYESVILLE CLASSIC STATS
Racing kicked off Saturday with the Dynamo Dave Sprint Challenge. The event is named after the Daves of Keyesville -- Dave Simpson and Dave Moore. It was a mile and a half uphill time trial and back down the SnakePit DH course.
What racers really come for, though, is to experience Sunday's eight mile XC loop. The course has such epic scenery and so many fast rolling sections of spectacular singletrack, the 1200 feet of climbing per lap is never really noticed.
That is until you realize that you're at 5500 feet. For many riders Keyesville is the first ride of the year at altitude. It gave us all a quick reminder that Big Bear National is just around the corner.
