Telluride, Colorado
(Scroll down for current results and race notes)
Originally penned as a giant do-it-all fiesta, the promoters of the Telluride 360 Adventure Festival had little idea that they would eventually be able to add World Cup racing to the list of events. But when two other downhill venues backed out at the last moment, Telluride suddenly had the opportunity to host the biggest race in the United States.
Besides round four of the World Cup XC and 4X series, the weekend of events kicks off with an International Cross-Country Omnium; a two-day points race that starts with a cross country on day one and concludes the following day with a short track. The Four-Cross takes place after the short track and the downhill culminates the bicycle portion of the festival on Sunday. Other events include an adventure race, rock climbing, trail running and fly-fishing.
World Cup XC and 4X racing concludes at round five in Les Gets, France September 7-8. That will also be the sight of the final, round five XC World Cup.

TELLURIDE RACE NOTES
*The base altitude at Telluride Ski Resort is 9540 feet. The 5.1-mile cross-country course had 1100 feet of climbing per lap. The women did three laps and the men four.
*Omnium riders received points based on their finish in the cross country and short track. One point was paid for first, two for second, three for third, and so on. The better short track result was used as the tie-breaker.
*Early women's cross country leader Jimena Florit went out too hard, started to struggle in the altitude, and couldn't respond to World Champion Alison Dunlap's attack. Shonny Vanlandingham would eventually overtake the suffering Florit during the final go around. Swiss champion Christoph Sauser was untouchable in the men's division.
*Telluride wasn't easy on the riders. It all started on Friday when Steve Peat crashed during downhill practice and severely banged up his right knee. Steve wisely sat out the four-cross and rested up as much as he could for Sunday's downhill. After a cautious first run, Peat blazed through the second run and earned a hard-fought downhill win by less than a quarter of a second.
*The John Tomac-designed four-cross course took its toll on riders, with many of the top names crashing out of the race. Most notably was World Four-Cross points leader Anne-Caroline Chausson, who collided with Katrina Miller in the women's final and was taken to the hospital on a backboard. Brain Lopes was also a victim of the four-cross course and crashed during a semifinal. Brian was went on to earn a fifth place finish and still retains the World Cup 4X points lead.
*Chausson was taken to the hospital with a feared concussion. But after being thoroughly checked out she was released at midnight. Although the bruised and battered rider could barely walk that morning, she decided to race just to earn enough points to maintain her overall lead. The result was Anne-Caroline's third straight World Cup win and a whopping 62 point lead in the standings. It was an amazing display of grit.
*World Cup points leader Chris Kovarik, who broke a thumb and rib and bruised a kidney during a Mont-Ste-Anne World Cup practice crash, still showed up to race. He nursed his body to a 21st place finish and slid from first to third in the standings.
