8th ANNUAL TRANSALP CHALLENGE--JULY 28

This year the 8 stage TransAlp Challenge course covered 456 miles and climbed 73,000 vertical feet. It started from the Bavarian village of Mittenwald, Germany. From there riders head back and forth between Austria, Switzerland and Italy while traversing the primitive roads and singletrack that transect the high passes of the famous Alps. The finish down to the town of Jesolo, Italy offered the only stretch of flat riding relief.

Out of the 524 two-man teams that started, 512 finished. Competitors of note include the Giant team comprised by Netherlands' Bart Brentjens and Austria's Martin Kraler. They placed 2nd in the first two stages, and placed 5th and 3rd in the next two before pulling out of the event.

Alison Sydor joined forces with Andreas Hestler to finish 2nd in the mixed category.
