Dear Mountain Bike Action: Currently ride a Kona Kula Supreme hardtail. I am looking for something a little more comfortable and fun on the downhills. I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and do a little bit of endurance racing and some adventure racing, so I would like to keep it somewhat light, but mostly just looking for something fun and capable riding with friends. I am 6'1" and 175 pounds and have been told that because of my height I might be well suited to a 29er. I am not sure about the pros and cons of 26 versus 29. Any thoughts?
-Eric, who has a lot to look forward to
A: Buy a…wait, it is not that simple. This is one of the most common questions we field here at Mountain Bike Action and there is no simple answer. Not to cop out to your question, but you need to pick up the phone, dial (800) 767-0345 and order our March 2011 issue (sorry, for some reason you can't order back issues on our website). The March issue is a buyer’s guide that not only lists bikes, it takes you through all the steps of picking the correct bike for where you live, the type of rider you are and the type of riding you do the most. Stories include, “Picking The Right Bike,” “Match Your New Bike To Your Body,” “Choose Your Own Adventure,” and “Flow Chart To Your Dream Bike.” As an added bonus, that issue also has a shootout between a 29er and 26er hardtail.
