Twice a bridesmaid at the 24 Hour World's, Cannondale's Tinker Juarez took home his first title in 2007's 10th anniversary running of the World 24 Hour Solo Championships. Kelly Magelky (BMC-Sports Garage) of Colorado led the entire race until lap 18 when Tinker blazed a 1:02 lap. That final lap by Tinker was equal to his second fastest time throughout the 24 hour time period.
Temperatures hovered around 100 degrees and well above seasonal average for the Monterey Bay area. While many riders found the 13.74-mile course and 2500 feet of climbing per lap extra challenging in the extreme heat, both Magelky and Juarez seemed to not even notice as they rode away from the field after lap one. Overall 3rd place finisher Nat Ross (Gary Fisher) lost 14 minutes within the first three laps alone.
A record number of Australians traveled across the pond, with John Waddell (Santa Cruz) taking a 6th place. Both John Claxton (Giant/18th) and Australian 24 Hour Champion Andrew Bell (Kona/19th) found the temperatures in the oven just too hot. Top British rider Ian Leitch (Independent Fabrication) improved on his 16th place finish in 2006 with an impressive 8th place. Top Canadian Leighton Poidevin (Bike Cafe) rounded out the top ten.
On the women's side Specialized rider Rebecca Rush moved up one place from 2006 and finished well ahead of second place Lynda Wallenfels of Colorado. Rush is an accomplish world class adventure racer who placed second to Monique Sawicki at this years U.S. 24 Hour Nationals. Here Rush was determined to finish atop the standings. Sawicki (Ergon) lost 25 minutes during lap two and three and was unable to finish the race.
Other top women hopefuls included Australian National 24 Hour Champion Kim McCormack and Louise Kobin (Sho-Air), who were both unable to find a rhythm in the heat.
With $20,000.00 in Prize money both Tinker and Rebecca took home big checks for $3750.00 each. Tinker road 261 miles total with 47,500 feet of climbing while Rebecca did 220 miles with 40,000 feet of total climbing.
While the heat was a major factor it was certainly more difficult on some of the Australian riders who are just coming off their winter back home. Still, Joel Donney (under 25), Jeff Toohey (30—34) and defending 45—49 winner Craig Peacock all took home World Championship titles in their respective age groups.
In the single speed category Matt Chaney (17 laps) and Pete Basinger (17 laps) battled the deepest talent pool that we've seen in years. Chaney in the end was crowned the single speed category winner and took home a custom frame from Spot Bikes of Colorado.
This year marked the first ever 3-Person Open Team Title for the World 24 Hours of Adrenalin Championships. Kenda/X-Fusion/Titus riders Brent Miller (Aus), Zephanie Blasi and James Meadley took home the top spot and a check for $3000. Intense—Don's Bikes came 2nd with 21 laps and 3rd place goes to Saris Cycling Group with 18 laps.
