U.S. CUP WEST OPENER AT VAIL LAKE FALLS TO JUAREZ, JENKINS & FITCHETT
By Phil Beckman/PB Creative — Vail Lake Resort was host to the opening round of the 2013 Kenda Cup West Series presented by Cannondale and Rock N’ Road Cyclery. Ideal racing conditions and a fast, rolling, typically high-desert, eight-mile course provided a promising start for a good turnout of ambitious regional athletes. This event also served as the opening race of the U.S. Cup Endurance Series, sending riders out for a 50-mile, multi-lap test.
Mountain bike icon/Methusela David “Tinker” Juarez (Sho-Air/Cannondale) was the victor in that marathon sufferfest, claiming the Open Men’s class and overall honors in just over three hours. Brothers Ben Bostrom (Specialized) and Eric Bostrom (Sho-Air/Cannondale) rounded out the top three, respectively.
Charles Jenkins (KHS) emerged from an early three-man breakaway to slay the three-lap, 24-mile Pro Men’s class, riding a 650b-wheeled bike across the line nearly a minute ahead of Elliot Reinecke (Velo Hangar). The last step of the podium was occupied by Gustavo Pedroza (Ellin Cycling Team).
Larissa Fitchett (Team Lost Coast Brewing) styled to the Pro Women’s win. Deyanira Guerrero (Veloz/Ellsworth) placed second and Vanessa Humic (Stan’s NoTubes/Kenda) rounded out the podium order.

Young gun Joel Titius (SoCal Endurance) put up a great fight, but old pro Tinker Juarez (Sho-Air/Cannondale) once again showed his marathon mastery.
Endurance Single Speed rider Allan LaFramboise (Bike for Bender/Don’s Bikes) put in a time that would have placed him in the middle of the 50-Miler Pro field.
On lap one of the Pro Men’s XC race, eventual winner Charles Jenkins (KHS/WAR/Cytomax) leads Elliot Reinecke (Velo Hangar) and Gustavo Pedroza (Ellin Cycling).
Larissa Fitchett (Lost Coast Brewing) was happy to be at the top of the Pro Women’s results.
Johnny O’Mara (Baghouse), 52 years young, was fastest among all the two-lap competitors.
Oliver Hutchinson (Muscle Milk) had the top Cat 1 three-lap time: 1:54:12.
Doug Andrews found out just how hard the ground is at Vail Lake. He still placed second in the Endurance Single Speed division.
