The 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships concluded Sunday at the Angel Fire Resort in Angel Fire, N.M., with the dual slalom competition and the omnium awards. The riders battled a dusty course on an otherwise beautiful day with sunny, cloudless skies and comfortably mild temperatures.

Team and Individual Omniums
After earning the maximum 94 points in six of the eight categories, Fort Lewis College won the Division I team omnium by 76 points over the University of Colorado-Boulder. The Skyhawks earned the maximum points in all but the men's and women's dual slalom contests. Marian University surged up the rankings with four individual podium appearances on Sunday to finish third with 445 points. Lees-McRae College finished only six points behind Marian with 439 points to place fourth, while the University of Wyoming placed fifth with 434 points.

Brevard College totaled 629 points to win the Division II team omnium, finishing 41 points ahead of second-place Union College-Ky. Powered by strong performances in the men's gravity events, Western State Colorado University totaled 421 points to place third, 41 points ahead of Warren Wilson College. Mars Hill College rounds out the top five with 359 points.

“I’ve been training and racing with these guys all season and I’ve seen how hard they’ve worked," Brevard College rider Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa./Brevard College) said. "It’s awesome to win this because it shows our program is going to be strong for years to come.”

Joey Schusler (Boulder, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder) used the same bike in all four events this weekend. He accrued 364 points to top the Division I men's individual omnium, beating silver medalist Rotem Ishay (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College) by only 18 points. Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./Lees-McRae College) finished third with 230 points. Erik Nelson (Gilbert, Ariz./Northern Arizona University) placed fourth with 209 points while Casey Coffman (Reno, Nev./University of Nevada-Reno) rounded out the top five with 142 points.

Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo./University of Wyoming) reached the podium in each of the four events this weekend to claim the top spot of the Division I women's individual omnium. Behlen earned a bronze medal in Sunday's dual slalom after placing fourth in each of the first three contests of the weekend. In all, Behlen amassed 478 points toward the individual omnium. Behlen's teammate Linnea Dixson (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished second with 292 points, only 23 points ahead of Eva Wilson (Kensington, N.H./Colorado State University), who placed third. Kaila Hart (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College) finished with 237 points to place fourth while Emily Paxson (Burlington, Vt./University of Vermont) was fifth with 231 points.

“It’s really fun to do all of the events because they are so different," Behlen said. "You get to compete with everybody and it’s fun to podium at all four events.”

Wesley Lamberson (Limestone, Tenn./Union College-Ky.) finished in the top-10 three times, including a bronze medal in the short track cross-country race, to total 375 points and win the Division II men's individual omnium. Bobby Zidek (Chico, Calif./California State University-Chico) placed second to Lamberson with 288 points while Timothy Jenkinson (Mars Hill, N.C./Mars Hill College) earned the bronze medal with 277 points. Justin Graves (Arcata, Calif./Humboldt State University) finished only one point ahead of Daniel Ennis (Pisgah Forest, N.C./Brevard College) to place fourth and fifth, respectively.

Similar to Behlen, Essence Barton (Thousand Oaks, Calif./California Lutheran University) reached the podium in each of the four events this weekend. Barton won the dual slalom, placed second in the downhill and finished fourth in the two endurance races, the cross-country and the short track cross-country to secure the top spot of the Division II women's individual omnium with 542 points. Zaveta earned three bronze medals before placing eighth in the dual slalom to record 470 points to finish second to Barton. Elisa Otter (Montpelier, Vt./Union College-Ky.) totaled 444 points to earn the bronze medal while Allison Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Warren Wilson College) placed fourth with 323 points. Kara Uhl (Smithville, Texas/Union College-Ky.) amassed 295 points to place fifth.

Dual Slalom
Division I Men
Bryce Hocking (Carlsbad, Calif./Marian University) defeated the defending Division I men's national champion Joey Schusler (Boulder, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder) to win the Stars-and-Stripes jersey.

Schusler won the first of two runs by .35 seconds. Hocking made up the difference in the second heat to ascend to the top step of the podium.

The winner of Saturday's Division I men's downhill national championship, John "J.D." Swanguen (Columbia, Ky./Lindsey Wilson College), qualified with the fourth-fastest time in dual slalom and looked strong heading into the semifinals against Schusler.

Schusler beat Swanguen to force Swanguen into the contest for the bronze against Logan Collins (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Lindsey Wilson College). Swanguen won as Collins was unable to compete in the contest for bronze.

Division I Women
Stephanie Caluag (Columbia, Ky./Lindsey Wilson College) upset Crystal Kalogris (Fort Wayne, Ind./Marian University), who won the Division II women's national title in this event in 2011, in the final heat to win the Division I women's national championship.

Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo./University of Wyoming), who qualified with the sixth-best time, managed to advance to the bronze-medal round. In that round, Behlen defeated Madison Pitts (Lake Worth, Fla./Lindenwood University) to secure the bronze medal.

Division II Men
Paul Mayes (Homer, Ill./Michigan Technological University) repeated as the Division II men's national champion after he defeated Owen Tulip (North Conway, N.H./Western State Colorado University) in the final.

Mayes crashed during the qualifying runs in the morning and was seeded 24th. He strung together clean rides through the ensuing rounds and advanced to the final where he defeated Tulip.

Mac Banner (Etowah, N.C./Brevard College) won the bronze medal after he slipped past Scott Hoenisch (US Air Force Academy, Colo./United States Air Force Academy) in the contest for third place.

Division II Women
Essence Barton (Thousand Oaks, Calif./California Lutheran University) earned her third consecutive collegiate national championship in the dual slalom when she defeated Ariana Altier (Chico, Calif./University of California-Chico) in the final round.

"I can't even explain it," Barton said. "This year has been so challenging racing Ariana Altier this year. We've been going back and forth all year. She beat me in downhill this weekend. Right when I got to the bottom of downhill, I knew I got second. I said, 'I'm going up to slalom and practicing.' It's so nice to have that competition. It feels so good to have that back and forth in a good competitive spirit. To win for the third time in my third year of college, it blows my mind."

Barton qualified with the best time during the morning qualifying runs, while Altier posted the second-best time. The top two seeds advanced through the 13-rider tournament.

Elisa Otter (Montpelier, Vt./Union College-Ky.) defeated Allison Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Warren Wilson College) in the ride for the bronze medal.

The 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships continued Saturday at the Angel Fire Resort in Angel Fire, N.M., with the short track cross-country and downhill competitions.

In the short track cross-country race, riders turned half-mile laps with minor elevation gain and loss for 20 minutes and three laps. The first gravity event of the competition, the downhill, spanned 1.5 miles and dropped riders 1,000 feet of elevation.

Division I
Men's Short Track Cross-Country
It was readily apparent in the early stages of the Division I men's short track cross-country race that the winner would be a member of Fort Lewis College. The two-time defending national champion, Rotem Ishay (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College), and Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College) quickly surfaced at the front after two laps.

Samuel Morrison (Butler, Pa./University of Colorado-Boulder) was a viable threat until the two Skyhawks drilled it with two laps remaining in the race to open a larger gap.

Ishay, who said this would be his last collegiate endurance race, left on top. He kicked in a higher gear and widened his advantage on Grotts to coast to the top spot of the podium for the third consecutive year.

"Last one! Three in a row," Ishay said. "That's my last endurance collegiate race. I was really motivated and really stressed. I haven't felt that for a collegiate race for a while. I've won a lot of stuff and I was not getting stressed for races, but this one was a big one for me, for sure."

Women's Short Track Cross-Country
Lauren Catlin (Fairfax, Calif./Fort Lewis College) showed no signs of fatigue a day after sucessfully defending her cross-country title, winning the short track cross-country race handily over the 47-rider field. Catlin crossed the line more than 30 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Deidre York (Indio, Calif./University of Colorado-Boulder). Catlin's teammate, Sofia Gomez Villafane (Los Gatos, Calif./Fort Lewis College) placed third.

Catlin took over the lead from York on the third lap and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the rest of the race.

"I felt really good today," said Catlin. "Watching the (Fort Lewis) boys do so well earlier, I was like, I gotta perform now. I can't let them get all the credit."

Catlin had to dodge a crash at the start of the race that involved her teammate Sarah Sturm (Durango, Colo.).

"I started in the third row and I think that actually saved me," Catlin said afterward. "I had enough time to see it. It was on my right, I went to the left and didn't get caught up in it. Last year, I was the one who got crashed out in the beginning so I know how it feels."

Men's Downhill
John Swanguen (Columbia, Ky./Lindsey Wilson College) earned the last starting position after qualifying with the best time (2:42.17) on Friday. He improved on that time to secure the Division I men's downhill national championship with a time of 2:38.46 on Saturday. He needed to improve his time to earn the first national championship of his career because Adam Digby (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Fort Lewis College) posted a time of 2:38.65 to earn the silver medal and defending national champion, Joey Schusler (Boulder, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder), registered 2:39.73 to place third.

"This feels really great," Swanguen said. "This is my first year racing collegiate at Lindsey Wilson. I didn't know what to expect. I couldn't ask too much. I'm definitely stoked with my performance today. I put down a solid run and handled it."

Women's Downhill
Brittany Clawson (Sandpoint, Idaho/Fort Lewis College) was the last rider down the mountain in the women's Division I race and she posted the fastest time of 3:17.99, over 10 seconds better than runner-up Madison Pitts (Lake Worth, Fla./Lindenwood University), who recorded a time of 3:28.85.

"It was really fast and hard," a jubilant Clawson said at the end of her run. "It's the fastest I've ever gone. We had such a solid girls team this year, it's so exciting to be a part of it. It was really cool to have five girls racing downhill. That's unbelievable. Our team is so awesome."

Division II
Men's Short Track Cross-Country
The Division II men's short track cross-country race provided significant drama. Wesley Lamberson (Limestone, Tenn./Union College-Ky.) and his teammate Peter Haile (Barbourville, Ky./Union College-Ky.) surged to the front of the race after two laps.

Despite starting in the middle of the field, Cypress Gorry (Brevard, N.C./Brevard College) surged and emerged among the leaders. As Haile began to fade, Lamberson and Gorry pushed the pace.

On the penultimate lap, Gorry attacked and Lamberson was unable to answer, allowing Gorry to wheel home with his second national title in two days. Michael Burleigh (Denver, Colo./University of Denver) passed Lamberson late in the race to sneak into second place, while Lamberson earned the bronze medal in third place.

"It was a tough race out there," Gorry said. "For about five laps, Wes was right in front of me. I could see him, but I couldn't quite get up to him. With three laps to go, I caught him on the climb and I got around him at the top. I had a clear course and I was able to get a little gap and I got it from there, I guess."

Women's Short Track Cross-Country
Rebecca Gross (Lakewood, Colo./University of Denver) capitalized on starting in the front row to grab an early lead in the Division II women's short track cross-country race. Gross would not relinquish the lead as she built a gap of close to 40 seconds after just the first half-mile lap.

Gross knew that a talented field of women, including the winner of Friday's cross-country race, Alexis Skarda (Boulder, Colo./Colorado Mesa University), Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa./Brevard College) and Essence Barton (Thousand Oaks, Calif./California Lutheran University) would be chasing her down.

Gross, who is pursuing a graduate degree in sports psychology, plied her future trade to keep her focused on the race.

"Alexis is so fast. I knew I had to do everything I could to stay in front of her and keep that gap big enough so she couldn't work it back up. There was a lot of self talk going on."

Gross' advice was sound as she won the race over Skarda by over a minute. Zaveta surged late in the race to finish third ahead of Barton.

Men's Downhill
The defending collegiate dual slalom national champion, Paul Mayes (Homer, Ill./Michigan Technological University), grabbed the Division II men's downhill national title after posting a time of 2:45.60, edging out Owen Tulip (North Conway, N.H./Western State Colorado University) by three seconds.

"It was a lot of fun," said Mayes of his run. "I was sliding everywhere but I held on. It was awesome."

Women's Downhill
Ariana Altier (Chico, Calif./California State University-Chico) registered an astounding time of 3:11.32 to win the Division II women's downhill competition. Each of the last three riders to descend the course improved the standard set by the previous contestant. Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa./Brevard College) lowered the mark by eight seconds after registering a time of 3:46.35 to temporarily occupy the hot seat. The penultimate rider of the competition, Essence Barton (Thousand Oaks, Calif./California Lutheran University), lowered the mark by 16 seconds with a seemingly unbeatable mark of 3:29.78. Altier bettered Barton's mark by 18 seconds to earn the first national championship of her career.

"This feels pretty good," Altier said of winning her first national championship. "I'm probably going to celebrate by going to the hot tub and write a paper that's due on Monday."

FRIDAY's EVENTS
Over 200 of the country's best collegiate mountain bikers competed on the first day of the 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships at the Angel Fire Resort in Angel Fire, N.M. The event opened with cross-country races and downhill seeding runs under beautiful, sunny skies and mild temperatures.

Division I
Men's Cross-Country
The day's first race pitted the country's best Division I men's cross-country racers against each other. Fort Lewis College dominated the men's race as the Skyhawks occupied the top three spots of the podium.

Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College) secured his third consecutive collegiate national title, including the last two Division I men's cross-country national titles. Grotts opened a 30-second lead at the top of the first climb and systematically opened a larger gap on the field as he turned four laps of the 18.8-mile course.

In the end, Grotts finished in 1:45:32, winning by 7:24 over his teammate, Rotem Ishay (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College). Freshman rider Garrett Lundberg (Salida, Colo./Fort Lewis College) placed third, 1:34 behinid Ishay.

"I wanted to test the waters and see who else would be up with us," Grotts said. "Once I got that initial gap, I decided I would just try to keep it if I could."

Women's Cross-Country
The women's race played out similarly. Lauren Catlin (Fairfax, Calif./Fort Lewis College), who also won the women's under-23 race at the 2012 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross-Country National Championships, repeated as the Division I women's cross-country national champion. Catlin opened a large margin on the first of three laps, leaving the field to fight for second.

Catlin completed the 14.1 miles in 1:46:12, to win the race by nearly two minutes over her teammate Sarah Sturm (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College). Deidre York (Indio, Calif./University of Colorado-Boulder) was only 47 seconds behind Sturm in third place. Sturm, York and Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo./University of Wyoming) dueled throughout the contest for second place.

"It's been a really long season for me," Catlin said. "I impressed myself today because I thought I'd be totally burned out. I've been racing since March with a big break over the summer. I just hoped I could last until now."

Division II
Men's Cross-Country
The Division II men's cross-country race was the most competitive race of the day. Richard Cypress Gorry (Brevard, N.C./Brevard College) was battling with his teammate, hometown rider Lewis Gaffney (Angel Fire, N.M./Brevard College) throughout the majority of the four-lap, 18.8-mile contest. Gorry pulled away from Gaffney late in the penultimate climb and cruised to the finish line in 1:59:07. Gaffney placed second, 1:17 behind Gorry. Michael Burleigh (Denver, Colo./University of Denver) earned the bronze medal, finishing the race in 2:05:00.

"For a while, I was in first and my teammate Lewis Gaffney was in second," Gorry said. "I was feeling really good today. It's nice to have the support from a great coaching staff from Brevard to make the trip really easy for us. We (Gaffney and Gorry) were riding together all week here. It really helped a lot having him show me the lines and whatnot."

Women's Cross-Country
The highly-anticipated Division II women's race was stacked with talent. Defending national champion Alexis Skarda (Boulder, Colo./Colorado Mesa University) needed a strong performance to hold off other talented riders like Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa./Brevard College) and Rebecca Gross (Lakewood, Colo./University of Denver).

Those three ladies did not disappoint as they vied for position from the start. After the first of three laps, Skarda and Gross took the lead with Zaveta charging hard in third place. Gradually, Skarda and Gross pulled away from the field, making it a two-woman race for the Stars-and-Stripes jersey.

During the last climb, Skarda, who rebounded from an early crash, attacked Gross. The defending short track cross-country national champion could not match Skarda's motor, allowing her to coast to victory.

Skarda won by 1:05 over Gross while Zaveta placed third, 5:21 behind Gross. Skarda and Gross each completed their 14.1-mile race faster than Catlin completed the same distance. Essence Barton (Thousand Oaks, Calif./California Lutheran University) and Elisa Otter (Montpelier, Vt./Union College-Ky.) round out the top five.

“It was a really good battle," Skarda said. "I think we were both just hanging on for dear life for most of the race and challenging each other throughout the race. I would try to pass her and she would speed up and we would throw in random surges. Finally I got a little bit of a lead and surged up a hill and got a little bit of a gap.”

Downhill Seeding
In the Division I men's downhill seeding, John Swanguen (San Diego, Calif./Lindsey Wilson College) will be the top seed after completing his run in 2:42.17. The defending Division I men's national champion, Joey Schusler (Boulder, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder), finished his seeding run in second place, 4.19 seconds behind Swnaguen. Zach Graveson (Pagosa Springs, Colo./Fort Lewis College) was third, finishing the course in 2:47.47.

Brittany Clawson (Sandpoint, Idaho/Fort Lewis College) topped the Division I women's downhill seeding run with a time of 3:34.17. Terah Blake (Albuquerque, N.M./University of New Mexico) finished her run in 3:37.52 while Madison Pitts (Lake Worth, Fla./Lindenwood University) placed third with a time of 3:40.97.

Paul Mayes (Homer, Ill./Michigan Technological University) secured the top spot in the Division II men's downhill seeding run, after completing the course in 2:55.38. Owen Tulip (North Conway, N.H./Western State Colorado University) took second place, finishing only .77 seconds behind and four hundredths of a second ahead of Matthew Callahan (Reading, Mass./Wentworth Institute of Technology), who placed third.

Ariana Altier (Chico, Calif./California State University-Chico) topped the Division II women's field by just under 26 seconds. Altier completed the course is 3:17.83 while her closest competitor, Essence Barton (Thousand Oaks, Calif./California Lutheran University), completed the course in 3:43.50. Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa./Brevard College), who finished third in the cross-country race earlier in the day, posted the third-fastest time, 3:50.07.

Omnium Update

After the first day of competition, Fort Lewis College held a 22-point lead in the Division I team omnium competition. After sweeping the top three spots of the men's race and winning the top two spots of the women's race, the Skyhawks earned the maximum 188 points on the first day. The University of Colorado-Boulder was in second place with 166 points after three of its riders appeared in the top five of the men's and women's races. Lees-McRae College sat in third place with 129 points. Colorado State University was only one point out of third, and the University of Wyoming held fifth place with 111 points.

Brevard College held a narrow lead atop the Division II team omnium competition with 167 points. Union College-Ky. was only one point back. while Colorado Mesa University was in third place with 143 points, 14 points ahead of fourth-place Western State Colorado University. The University of Denver sat in fifth place with 99 points.

Saturday’s racing would feature the short track cross-country races in the morning and early afternoon before the downhill competition would complete the day’s action later in the afternoon.
