Northern California held the first one day State Championship Mountain Bike race. The small town of Weaverville is nestled in the Trinity Alps with hundreds of miles of singletrack carved into the landscape. Northern exposure meant harsher climate for competitors south of the Keyesville Classic and the Sierra Nevades. A steady cold rain persisted up until race day. Riders woke Saturday morning to see a light dusting of snow on the hilltops. The 23 mile course (18 miles for the beginners) was saturated with slippery mud. For the most part the course was rideable. The rider's technical skills were challenged with navigating over slippery wooden bridges and narrow singletrack running along steep drop offs. Race director Sick Vick Armijo of Team Bigfoot sets up the races in true old school fashion. Mass starts, no leg numbers, pull tags, and a family felt atmosphere is what you find at the Team Bigfoot events.
Team Platinum Performance had eight riders make the 9 hour journey to the upper top end of the state. At the finish of the day we had three State Champions emerge from the mud bath. Terry Dahl (Expert 65+) finished his winning season on top of the podium. John Biron (Sport 45-49) continued to dominate his class with the state title. It was a great finish to much success this season which also included the California State Series and the Rim Nordic Series. Luke Werkhoven (Sport Clydesdale 34-and-under) came out victorious after being out all season with an ACL injury. Krage Olrich (Expert 40-44), Ryan Booth (Expert Single Speed) and Peter Gilberd (Expert 35-39) raced to 4th position. Andy Osburn (Expert 40-44) pulled out a 5th. I, Todd Booth, DNF'd with a mechanical only 3 miles into my Expert 35-39 event.
Congrats to team Platinum Performance for the outstanding 2007 cross-country season: 9 State Series Champions, 3 State Champions, 30+ individual victories and a 3rd consecutive Coed Team CA State Series title.
