Rim Nordic's annual Mark J. Reynolds Memorial Stage Race is the perfect chance for mountain bikers to employ some Tour de France strategy. The weekend long event opens Saturday morning with an uphill time trial followed by a dirt crit at noon. It concludes on day two with the 3rd race of the Rim Nordic XC Series. Where the tactics become interesting is that along with the tired racers from day one, the final stage enters into the equation riders who are only contesting the XC Series. Competitors vying to win the stage race had to study stage 1 and stage 2 results; factor in whether or not they're also going after the overall in the XC Series, and finally, figure who they had to beat in stage 3 in order to win the overall. Got all that?
WEIRD WEATHER
Then there was the rain. Although Southern California is still in the midst of a heat wave, the mountain region was hit with a summer storm. The rain began dumping hard at the conclusion of the dirt crit. That doesn't seem all that bad, but it's not the optimal condition for after race cleanup and to kick off recovery. On Sunday the rain held out until the exact moment the pros and experts left the line. Now the normally 24-7 dry weather riders had to relearn how to ride mud and with brakes that suddenly weren't there (at least those with rim brakes).
