2002 SUBARU ICEMAN COMETH CHALLENGE--NOV 4

Traverse City, Michigan

What do you get when you mix 2400 racers, 27 miles of sandy singletrack, 30 degree temperatures and snow flurries? The 13th Annual Subaru Iceman Commeth in Traverse City, Michigan. More of an adventure than a race, the 2400 hearty souls are sent off in waves depending upon which of the 39 classes they compete in.

Christopher Pietrzak, a Specialized rider from Morgan Hill, California, won the Pro Men?s division over Carey Grumelot, Derek Prechtl and three-time winner Steve Tilford (who missed a turn near the finish while leading that cost him a podium position). ?I won this event twice because of other people?s mistakes so I guess it was my turn to make a mistake,? Said Tilford after the event. ?It is hard to get bummed-out at this event. It is so much fun. This is one of the best events I race.?

Ann Arbor?s Alicia Mayer made it a Specialized sweep by taking the Pro Women?s class by close to two minutes over Team Subaru/Gary Fisher Bicycles? Chrissy Redden.

Big name World Cup racers Ryder Hesjedal and Walker Ferguson were flown in by their sponsor (Team Subaru/Gary Fisher Bicycles, who are also the official bike of the event). The riders perplexed spectators who expected to see the two at the front of the pro men. Instead, they rode behind the men?s field to finish 38th and 39th out of 40. Neither rider had come to race (because of the time of year and their training schedule) and it was a disappointment. Nobody likes to see a racer who doesn?t race.
