2002 SOCAL (NV,UT) WINTER RACE SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

2002 CALIFORNIA CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Located 80 miles from Los Angeles, Vail Lake Village and Resort in Temecula kicks of the first race of the new year. Sitting adjacent to the Cleveland National Forest, the Vail course is a seven mile loop around one side of the lake. The trail consists mostly of duo-track with many challenging singletrack offshoots. It's a fast course with miles of tempo climbing and a fast, two-mile long descent. Total climbing is 1500 feet. The lower area of the course has a sandy base and takes water well. If it rains though, be prepared -- Some of the climbing sections have sticky, gumbo-type mud. Pros, Experts and Sport ride three laps and Beginners and 14 and under Juniors go two laps. The course is equally competitive for hardtails and full-suspension bikes. Use fast pedaling tires.

The 2002 California Championship Series dates are: January 6. February 3. March 3. Entry is $28. Contact (760) 731-1165 or register online at active.com.

SOUTHRIDGE 2002 WINTER SERIES

At only a 35 mile drive straight up Interstate 10, Southridge Park in Fontana is the closest mountain bike racing to Los Angeles. The park is a rock's throw from the base of the San Bernardino Forest and Big Bear. The nine mile loop offers 2500 feet of climbing, including Tinker's Hill. Tinker's hill is a 1000 foot, rock slab and singletrack climb with a few 45% stretches and an average grade of 25%. Come out just to see if you can make it up the climb in 34-21 like Tinker does. The Southridge course includes many technical, serpentine singletrack climbs and descents. Pros and Experts race three laps, Sport two and Beginners ride one lap and bypass the hill. Full suspension rules the course! Run full knobby tires with good volume.

The one-and-a-half mile downhill run includes fast, busy and pedaling sections. There are numerous rock drops, off-chambers, dips and jumps. The decomposed clay offers good traction. Use a tough tire that isn't too big to pedal, like a Gazzaloddi Jr.

The 2002 Southridge USA Winter Series dates are 1/13, 1/27, 2/10, 2/24, 3/10. The cross country starts at 9:30 a.m., the free downhill shuttle begins at 11 a.m. and the downhill starts at 1:30 p.m. Many of the riders race the cross country in the morning for conditioning and the downhill in the afternoon. Entry is $20 for Southridge Racing Club members and $25 for non-members. For the $30 SRC membership you not only get $5 off each entry, but a THE numberplate, permanent number for the year, a pair of ODI grips, SRC Pro-Motion T-shirt plus the chance to win a Yamaha TTR225 and thousands of dollars of product.
