SHIMANO WINTER SERIES #4

(2/27/2008)

Unbeatable: Chris Kovarik (Intense) kept his win streak alive at race #4. Chris is flanked by 2nd and 3rd place riders Jason Memmelaar (Diablo Freeride) and Cody Warren (C Dub).

Top women: Melissa Buhl (KHS), Claire Buchar (Intense) and Michelle Rivera (Steven K) finished 1-2-3. It rained overnight and into morning practice, but conditions were perfect by race time.

Skipping the pond: Dale Holmes (KHS) showed improving form in both the 4X and SD. Holmes has strong pedaling endurance! Holmes spends half of the year racing in England.

Pretty in pink: Race promoter Don Jackson's youngest daughter Brittany Crusher took the expert 4X field. The entire Jackson family is way into motocross and gravity and gated mountain biking.

There are many tales in Southridge Winter Series #4's windy city. Like the huge fields. The Winter Series is becoming very busy as more and more riders get an early reconnaissance of the Norba opener beginning March 27, 2008. Then there is Ex BMX World Champ Dale Holmes, the first rider this year to straight up unseat Norba Gated Champ Eric Carter in the 4-Cross. Or how about the yet-to-be-beaten Chris Kovarik winning the downhill by a huge 8 seconds? Then there is Southridge 18-and-Under Expert Champ Kevin Aiello (Yeti) with the 4th best downhill time of the day. And in the Super D? After finally getting beat last race by Norba number 3 Waylon Smith (SoCal Specialized), Norba number 5 Eric Bierman (Niner) rode back on top again. But wait, what's this? Yes, that's KHS 4-Cross'er and BMX'er Dale Holmes taking the Expert Super D field with the 3rd fastest time of the day. Watch out Norba!

What were the stories in the Shimano Winter Series Cross-Country? Intense's Robert Herber was one. Even a shoe failure couldn't stop the blooming pro and Temecula Series race promoter from topping a huge field of elite riders.

That finally brings us to multi amateur motocross champ Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey. He is being trained by National Master Cross-Country Champ, and ex Supercross, Motocross and Motocross des Nations Champ Johnny O'Mara. Now that the 125 East Supercross Series has begun, Ryan has a bit of a break until the West Series concludes in two months. So Johnny dragged Ryan along as O'Mara made his first 2008 test appearance aboard his new Niner. For Ryan's first mountain bike race the Supercross star just didn't race, he entered the 18-and-Under Expert category. Then he went on to double the back valley culvert as he rode his loaner Trek hardtail through the Semipro field and on to the the 12th fastest time of the day. Not bad for a first timer...

EPILOUGE
Ryan Dungey is 6 points behind Yamaha rider Jason Lawrence heading into the April 26, 2008 Supercross Lites West finale in Seattle, WA. The Supercross Shootout, which pits the East Lites riders against the West Lites riders, will be May 3, 2008 in Las Vegas, NV.
