15th Annual Shimano Winter Series Presented By Subaru

(1/16/2009)
Compiled by Ed Arnet
Fifteen years ago we raced the very first Southridge Winter Series. We still love riding the hills of Fontana as much as ever. The courses are always fun, unique and challenging. There is no other mountain bike place in the world that can take water as well. After a week’s worth of rain, the Southridge singletrack is still be rideable; there is no other better place to host a winter series. Plus, it never rains anyway; the temps hit the 80’s for the first Shimano Winter Series event presented by Subaru.

Busy: There was a huge first event turnout and all weekend long a steady flow of racers lined up to join the Southridge Racing Club.

From left to right: Greg Buhl, Anton Petron, Romolo Forcino, Manuel Prado, John Nobil, Garnet Vertican, Robert Herber and Eric Bierman up the hill and against the wind.

Sandblasted!: Gusts of 50mph raced up the XC Wall Road. Patrik Gunnison (left) and Sport 19-26 winner David Robinson cheat the wind.

Pro Podium: Manuel Prado, Eric Bierman, Michael Hansen, Robert Herber and Greg Buhl finished 1st through 5th.

KHS factory: MBA’s Eddie Arnet checks out Pro Logan Binggeli (black), Team Captain and Pro Quinton Spaulding (tan shirt) and Expert David Dasta (geared up).

Parents and preschoolers: Shimano puts great effort into promoting mountain biking as an extra exciting sport for kids and parents alike. Every finisher earns an award.

50 years young: Longtime racer Nancy Harris competes XC, SD, DH and 4X…often all four events over the same weekend!

New kit still en route: Eric Carter trained hard over the fall and it showed in complete DH and 4X domination. For 2009 Mongoose riders will be racing for sister company GT.

From Rockies to rocks: Top Mtn States Cup competitor Lisa Myklak came from Boulder, CO to prepare early for the National Opener. Everyone loved the new Route 66 DH circuit.

Wind force: Double D David Dasta drops into the lower rock garden. This section wasn’t as tough as the following Wall Straight, where riders faced 50mph Santa Ana’s.

Shimano’s Winter Series is one of the best ways to begin a successful build period. Don’t miss out on your chance. Because the deeper we get into the Shimano Winter Series, the deeper the talent pool will become. The Pro Tour National Opener at Fontana is March 28-29, and only one week following the Winter Series Finale. Trust us, that final event is going to be a mini national!

That was my first non-beginner race and I got the 7th fastest time of the day, racing sport, i felt horrible afterwards after being called a sandbagger. I moved to Expert the next race.
Your coverage is great, keep it up.

Ed, thanks for the kind words and making this young lady look good!!! However, I only compete in 2 events per weekend. Last year it was XC and DH. This year it's 4x and DH!!!
