Equestrian Group Lobbies to Throw SoCal Mountain Bikers off of LA City Trails

(4/14/2009)
Forward by R. Cunningham
Mountain biking in Los Angeles City parks is under attack by emtionally charged Equestrian groups who are attempting to reword an authorized ban on mountain biking in Griffith Park into a blanket ban on all mountain biking in LA City parks and parkland. The fear-based argument is the same old wives tale that the very presence of mountain bikers on shared tails equates to death and dismemberment of helpless equestrians.

Horse pucky!

I ride and keep horses and live in a predominantly equestrian community. We share the trails with mountain bikers and often, OHV motorized vehicles, and the actual conflicts between horses and bikes are minimal or nonexistant. Equestrians must learn and live by the same rules as other trail user groups--be prepared for the unexpected, ride in control and to respect the experience of others.

Send a message to the LA City Council--remind them that shared use of LA City and County trails has been repeatedly challenged by these same folks in the past and that shared use of community trails has been proven to be the successful and sustainable solution in all but the rarest case. In fact, almost every mile of trail in the LA area is designated as multi-use and that the fact that a person is riding an animal does not grant them an exclusive right to enjoy a public resource.

Read the Equestrian call to action below and respond quickly to silence this nonsense.

We got the following email faxed to us by one of our equestrian friends.
Let the LA city council know how you feel about this. Show up at the meeting!
